Study Notes
Airspace Classifications and Regulations
- Class B airspace has a speed limit of not applicable above FL100 (10,000 ft).
- Class B airspace separates all aircraft; VFR (Visual Flight Rules) operations are allowed.
- VMC (Visual Meteorological Conditions) in Class B requires being clear of clouds and in sight of the surface.
Control Zones and Traffic Management
- Control zones extend laterally at least 5 NM from the center of an aerodrome.
- Speed limit below 10,000 ft in Class E airspace is 250 kt IAS (Indicated Airspeed).
- FIS (Flight Information Service) provides collision hazard information in Classes C, D, E, F, and G.
IFR and VFR Operations
- VFR flight in Class E requires no two-way radio communication.
- Danger, Prohibited, and Restricted areas are designated by a country identifier, a P/D/R, and a number.
- VFR traffic is separated from other VFR traffic only in Class B airspace.
Control Areas (CTRs and CTAs)
- CTR (Control Area) and CTA (Control Zone) primarily manage IFR traffic.
- Speed limit for VFR traffic in Class C airspace below 10,000 ft is 250 kt IAS.
- Control zones extend from the surface to a specified upper limit and include an advisory service for IFR traffic.
Upper and Lower Airspace Boundaries
- The lowest height of a CTA above ground or water is 200 m.
- The upper limit of a CTA is defined by a VFR flight level.
- UIR (Upper Airspace) lower boundary must be at a VFR flight level.
Advisory and Traffic Information Services
- Class D airspace allows both IFR and VFR; IFR traffic receives advisory ATC for separation.
- In airspaces E and G, VFR can be conducted without a radio.
- In Class C airspace, all IFR flights are separated from each other and also from VFR traffic.
Flight Services in Various Airspace Classes
- Class E airspace provides ATC to IFR flights and FIS to VFR flights.
- In Class C airspace, IFR is separated from IFR, and both IFR and VFR receive separation from other traffic.
