Aircraft Specifications and Type Certificate Data Sheets
- Contain information on the aircraft's empty weight and useful load.
- Information on the aircraft's empty weight and useful load is not voided and a new Certificate is issued upon application by the new owner when the aircraft is sold.
Issuance of an Airworthiness Certificate
- Governed by 14 CFR Part 21.
Aircraft Mechanic Privileges and Limitations
- Mechanics can perform major alterations on US certificated aircraft as long as the work is done in accordance with FAA-approved technical data.
- FAA-approved technical data includes Airworthiness Directives, AC 43.13-2A, and Supplemental Type Certificates.
- Mechanics are not allowed to perform work that is a major alteration unless it is supervised by a certificated mechanic with airframe and powerplant ratings.
- A certificated mechanic with a powerplant rating may perform the annual inspection required by the Federal Aviation regulations on a powerplant or any component thereof and approve and return the same to service.
- A certificated mechanic shall not exercise the privileges of the certificate and rating unless, within the preceding 24 months, the Administrator has found that the certificate holder is able to do the work.
- A repair, as performed on an airframe, shall mean the restoration of the airframe to a condition for safe operation after damage or deterioration.
- Mechanics are not allowed to approve for return to service a major repair unless the underlying structure is altered or repaired.
Falsification of Aircraft Documents
- The maximum penalty for falsification, alteration, or fraudulent reproduction of certificates, logbooks, reports, and records is ineligibility to receive any certificate or in any way from the original cover.
Maintenance Records
- The owner of the aircraft, or the lessee in the case of leased aircraft, is responsible for maintaining the aircraft in an airworthy condition.
- Maintenance records should include information about the date of the inspection, aircraft time in service, and a brief description of the extent of the inspection.
- Replacing or cleaning spark plugs and setting of sparkplug gap clearance is considered preventative maintenance.
Airworthiness Directives (ADs)
- Issued by the airframe, powerplant, or component manufacturer to address safety concerns.
- Compliance with an AD is mandatory for all aircraft unless it is for hire.
Aircraft Maintenance and Alterations
- Removal of accessories that are listed as required equipment on the aircraft or engine specifications is considered a powerplant major modification.
- A certification confirming that the maintenance work to which it relates has been complied with in accordance with the applicable standards of airworthiness using approved data is called a Maintenance Release.
- Strengthening or reinforcing the fuselage longeron is an airframe major alteration.
- Conversions of any sort for the purpose of using fuel rating or grade other than listed in the engine specifications is an airframe major alteration.
- When a major repair alteration results in any change in the aircraft operating limitations or data contained in approved airplane flight manual, appropriate amendments to the aircraft operating limitations shall be made.
- The owner of an aircraft shall be responsible for maintaining the aircraft in an airworthy condition.
- The owner of an aircraft shall be responsible for ensuring that all maintenance, overhaul, modifications, and repairs which affect airworthiness are performed as prescribed by the State of Registry.
Time Limits for Required Inspections
- An aircraft must undergo a 100 hour inspection every 100 hours of time in service.
- The 100-hour inspection is required by the Federal Aviation Regulations on a powerplant or any component thereof.
- An aircraft's airworthiness certificate must be renewed every 2 years.
- Aircraft owners must undergo a 100-hour inspection every 100 hours of time in service or within 3 years of a previous inspection.
Airworthiness Certificate Renewal
- Before renewal, the certificate holder, or a representative, must present acceptable evidence to the Administrator that the aircraft conforms to its type certificate and all applicable airworthiness directives and that it is in a condition for safe operation.
- The certificate holder must present an aircraft maintenance record to the Administrator.
Flight Permit
- If an aircraft has not been flown more than 100 hours since the last 100-hour inspection, then a special flight permit may be authorized for the aircraft to be flown to another airport.
