18 Questions

What signals are used for system control by the LGCIU?

The thrust lever set to takeoff and a N2 above idle signal

Which signals are used for system control by the CFDIU?

The ground/flight signal

What data is sent via an ARINC bus for avionics equipment ventilation system monitoring?

BITE data

How are valves, sensors, fans, and switches monitored in the avionics compartment?

By the AEVC

Where is the failure status displayed for monitored components?

On the ECAM and control panels

What is the purpose of the Cargo Ventilation and Heating system?

To provide ventilation and heating to the forward and aft cargo compartments

What happens when the skin temperature drops below +32 deg.C?

The system goes back to a closed circuit configuration.

In what scenario is air tapped from the cockpit supply duct to cool the avionics equipment?

When the BLOWER P/B S/W is set to OVRD.

What triggers the illumination of the FAULT on the extract pushbutton switch?

Low flow detected by the pressure switch in the extraction line.

What actions must be taken when the FAULT on the extract pushbutton switch is illuminated?

Select OVRD on the pushbutton switch.

What happens on the ground when the ADIRU & AVNCS VENT caution light comes on amber?

The horn sounds.

Describe the ventilation process for the avionics equipment when cooled by the air conditioning system.

Air comes into the system through the skin exchanger outlet bypass valve and is directed overboard through the skin air outlet valve.

How are the FWD and aft cargo compartments ventilated?

By cabin ambient air coming from the cabin zones through openings in the cabin floor or by means of an extraction fan.

What controls the ventilation system in the avionics equipment?

The Avionics Equipment Ventilation Computer (AEVC).

How many configurations are there for the skin air inlet and outlet valves in the avionics ventilation system?

Three configurations: Open circuit, Closed circuit, and Flight configuration.

What supplies cooling air to the avionics equipment?

The avionics ventilation system with a blower fan and an extraction fan.

When do the fans in the avionics ventilation system operate?

The fans operate continuously when the aircraft electrical system is supplied.

How is the aft cargo compartment ventilated?

By means of an extraction fan only.

Study Notes

Cargo Ventilation

  • FWD and aft cargo compartments are ventilated by cabin ambient air from the cabin zones through openings in the cabin floor behind the sidewall panels.
  • FWD cargo compartment is ventilated by means of an extraction fan or by differential pressure.
  • Aft cargo compartment is ventilated by means of an extraction fan only.
  • The ventilation system is optional and independent for each compartment.

Avionics Equipment Ventilation

  • Avionics ventilation system supplies cooling air to avionics equipment, including avionics compartment, flight deck instruments, and circuit breaker panels.
  • A blower fan and an extraction fan supply the air through the avionics equipment.
  • The fans operate continuously while the aircraft electrical system is supplied.
  • AEVC controls the fans and skin valves based on flight/ground logic and fuselage skin temperature.
  • There are three configurations for the skin air inlet and outlet valves: open circuit (on ground only), closed circuit (in flight or low external air temperature on ground), and thrust lever set to takeoff and N2 above idle signal.

Avionics Equipment Ventilation System Monitoring

  • AEVC monitors valves, sensors, fans, and switches.
  • Failure status is displayed on the ECAM and control panels.

Cargo Ventilation and Heating

  • Forward and aft cargo compartments can have a ventilation system as an option on the Airbus single aisle family.
  • A heating system can also be installed in these two compartments or only one of them.
  • The heating system will only be installed together with a ventilation system.
  • Air from the main cabin is supplied into the cargo compartment by the extract fan or by differential pressure in flight (FWD Cargo Compartment only).
  • The air is discharged overboard after its circulation through the compartment.

Abnormal Operation

  • AEVC illuminates FAULT on the extract pushbutton switch if the pressure switch in the extraction line detects low flow.
  • When the fault occurs, OVRD on the pushbutton switch must be selected.
  • This causes the conditioned air inlet valve and skin exchanger isolation valve to open, and all other valves close.
  • On the ground, the ADIRU & AVNCS VENT caution light comes on amber on the external power panel, and the horn sounds.
