Study Notes

Cargo Ventilation

  • FWD and aft cargo compartments are ventilated by cabin ambient air from the cabin zones through openings in the cabin floor behind the sidewall panels.
  • FWD cargo compartment is ventilated by means of an extraction fan or by differential pressure.
  • Aft cargo compartment is ventilated by means of an extraction fan only.
  • The ventilation system is optional and independent for each compartment.

Avionics Equipment Ventilation

  • Avionics ventilation system supplies cooling air to avionics equipment, including avionics compartment, flight deck instruments, and circuit breaker panels.
  • A blower fan and an extraction fan supply the air through the avionics equipment.
  • The fans operate continuously while the aircraft electrical system is supplied.
  • AEVC controls the fans and skin valves based on flight/ground logic and fuselage skin temperature.
  • There are three configurations for the skin air inlet and outlet valves: open circuit (on ground only), closed circuit (in flight or low external air temperature on ground), and thrust lever set to takeoff and N2 above idle signal.

Avionics Equipment Ventilation System Monitoring

  • AEVC monitors valves, sensors, fans, and switches.
  • Failure status is displayed on the ECAM and control panels.

Cargo Ventilation and Heating

  • Forward and aft cargo compartments can have a ventilation system as an option on the Airbus single aisle family.
  • A heating system can also be installed in these two compartments or only one of them.
  • The heating system will only be installed together with a ventilation system.
  • Air from the main cabin is supplied into the cargo compartment by the extract fan or by differential pressure in flight (FWD Cargo Compartment only).
  • The air is discharged overboard after its circulation through the compartment.

Abnormal Operation

  • AEVC illuminates FAULT on the extract pushbutton switch if the pressure switch in the extraction line detects low flow.
  • When the fault occurs, OVRD on the pushbutton switch must be selected.
  • This causes the conditioned air inlet valve and skin exchanger isolation valve to open, and all other valves close.
  • On the ground, the ADIRU & AVNCS VENT caution light comes on amber on the external power panel, and the horn sounds.
