History of Extension

  • The term "extension" first described adult education programs by Oxford and Cambridge in England, starting in 1867.
  • These programs extended university work into neighboring communities.
  • The United States formally adopted the term with land-grant universities established as teaching institutions in the 1860s.
  • In the early 20th century, the UK transferred agricultural extension to the Ministry of Agriculture, termed "Advisory Services."

Stirrings in 19th Century England

Subsequent Transformations
