Study Notes
AFFF (Aqueous Film Forming Foam) Station Procedures
- Establish communication using net X50J or the designated circuit.
- Confirm power availability via the white luminescent light.
- Ensure the AFFF tank is at 95% capacity or higher.
- Verify proper system alignment using EOSS procedures for AFFF-V.
Manual Refilling of AFFF Station
- Open a 5-gallon drum of AFFF concentrate.
- Pour the AFFF concentrate into the tank.
- AFFF's lifespan is effectively infinite; it remains usable even after freezing and thawing.
- There is a reserve of 60, 5-gallon drums (600 gallons total) stored forward and aft.
- Refilling requires two people: one to fill and one as a safety observer.
Cross Connects
- There are two cross connects for AFFF: one outside of medical and one outside the mess decks.
- Cross connects allow AFFF distribution from one station if another is inoperable.
- Open the cross connect and the selective powertrol to redirect AFFF flow.
Loss of Electrical Power
- ABTs (Automatic Bus Transfer System) automatically switch from primary to secondary power in case of power loss.
- ABTs are located outside SIFR (forward) and outside the barbershop (aft).
- The AFFF system requires 440V to operate.
Loss of Firemain
- Verify firemain alignment.
- Check firemain pressure at the AFFF station and CCS (Central Control Station).
Loss of AFFF Concentrate
- Check the AFFF tank level.
- Verify system alignment.
- Inspect the pump control valve.
- Inspect the master Solenoid Operated Pilot Valve (SPOV).
Failed SOPV (Solenoid Operated Pilot Valve)
- Manually operate the master or service SOPV by twisting the T-handle if automatic operation fails.
Loss of Communications
- Use circuit X2JZ (Auxiliary Damage and Stability Control Circuit), which connects to all lockers.
- Use Net 80/2JZ for communication.
AFFF System Components
- Master SOPV controls the Hycheck, Powercheck, and the pump.
- Service SOPV controls the powertrols.
- Single Stage Pump operates at 65 GPM at 175 PSI.
Hycheck Valve
- Controls the firemain supply.
- In standby mode, firemain pressure from the master SOPV keeps the Hycheck closed.
- When the master SOPV releases pressure, firemain forces the Hycheck open.
- If AFFF/seawater pressure exceeds firemain pressure, the valve closes to prevent backflow.
Powercheck Valve
- Controls the flow of AFFF concentrate.
- A powertrol valve with a lift check feature.
- The upper valve spring normally keeps the valve closed when no pressure is applied.
- Firemain pressure on the control line opens the valve.
Powertrol Valve
- Controls the AFFF solution.
- Normally closed by spring pressure.
- Opens when the service SOPV pressurizes the control line with firemain pressure.
AFFF Tank
- Capacity: 600 gallons.
- Composed of 90% copper and 10% nickel for corrosion resistance.
81M Check Valve
- Prevents water from flowing into the master SOPV and potentially activating it.
BPPS/Pancake Valve (Pressure Proportioning System)
- Returns excess AFFF concentrate to the tank.
- Uses firemain pressure on top and AFFF pressure on the bottom, separated by a plate.
- Excess AFFF pushes the plate down, allowing concentrate to return to the tank.
Proportioner
- Mixes seawater and AFFF concentrate.
- Achieves a 94/6 ratio (94% seawater, 6% AFFF concentrate).
- Creates a venture effect to draw in AFFF concentrate.
Forward (FWD) AFFF Station
- Controls the forward vertical replenishment station, Main 1, and Auxiliary 1.
- Covers areas forward of frame 220.
Aft AFFF Station
- Controls the Flight Deck, Main 2, 3 Gen, RAST, hanger bay (port and starboard).
- Covers areas at and aft of frame 220.
AFFF Sprinkling System
- Uses push buttons (start and stop) to control sprinkling and prevent overflow.
- Located at entries/exits and inside protected spaces.
AFFF Hose Reel
- Has only a start button.
- Features a cutout valve to stop AFFF flow, or use the bail.
- Located at entrances/exits of engineering spaces for each deck and outside the space.
- Main 2 has an extra AFFF hose reel on the upper level.
- The hose is non-collapsible to enable single-person operation.
Color Coding
- AFFF: Red and Green
- AFFF Concentrate: Red and Blue
- Firemain: Red
