Diagnostic Criteria for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
-
ADHD is characterized by persistent patterns of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that disrupt functioning or development.
-
Inattention symptoms include:
- Careless mistakes in schoolwork or activities due to a lack of attention to detail.
- Difficulty sustaining attention during tasks or play, often losing focus.
- Apparent lack of listening when spoken to directly, indicating distraction.
- Failure to follow through on tasks, leading to unfinished work or chores.
- Challenges in organizing tasks, resulting in messy or disorganized work and poor time management.
- Avoidance or reluctance to engage in tasks requiring sustained mental effort.
- Frequent misplacement of necessary items for tasks (e.g., school materials, keys).
- Easy distraction by extraneous stimuli or unrelated thoughts.
- Forgetfulness in daily activities, impacting responsibilities like chores and appointments.
-
Hyperactivity-Impulsivity symptoms include:
- Fidgeting, tapping hands or feet, or squirming in one's seat.
- Leaving seats in situations where remaining seated is required.
- Running or climbing in inappropriate situations; in adults, may express as feelings of restlessness.
- Inability to play or engage in leisure activities quietly.
- Acting as if driven by a motor, demonstrating restlessness in situations requiring stillness.
- Excessive talking and blurting out answers before questions are complete.
- Difficulty waiting turns in conversations or activities.
- Interrupting or intruding on others’ activities or conversations without permission.

- Clear evidence must demonstrate that symptoms interfere with or diminish the quality of social, academic, or occupational functioning.
- Symptoms cannot occur exclusively during a period of schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders, nor can they be better explained by other mental health disorders (e.g., mood disorders, anxiety disorders, substance intoxication).
