Understanding Voice of Verbs
- A verb's "voice" indicates whether the subject performs the action or is affected by it.
- The voice of the verb is a form of the verb which shows whether the subject performs the action or not
Active vs. Passive Voice
- Verbs are in active voice when the subject performs the action.
- Verbs are in passive voice when the action is performed upon the subject.
Examples of Active and Passive Voice
- "The dog chased the cat" and "Liz played the piano" are examples of active voice, where the dog and Liz are the doers.
- If the subject performs the action of the verb, then the verb is active
- "The cat was chased by the dog" and "The piano was played by Liz" are examples of passive voice.
- If the subject receives the action of the verb, the verb is in the passive voice.
Passive Voice Structure
- For passive voice, the subject can be moved to the end of the sentence with a "by" phrase or be removed, particularly if unimportant or unknown.
- Passive voice verbs include a form of "be" (been, had, was, were, etc.) and a past participle.
Reasons for Using Passive Voice
- Focus on the recipient of the action rather than the doer.
- The receiver is more important than the doer.
- To avoid highlighting the doer.
- To keep an objective tone without specifying the one performing the action.
Key Concepts
- The voice of a verb reveals whether the subject does the action (active voice) or receives it (passive voice).
