Active and Passive Voice
- Voice is a verb form indicating whether the subject performs the action or the action is performed on the subject.
- Active voice: Subject performs the action (e.g., The dog chased the cat).
- Passive voice: Subject receives the action (e.g., The cat was chased by the dog).
Uses of Passive Voice
- Describing a process (e.g., Sugar is added to tea).
- Narrating an incident (e.g., A man was hit by a car).
- Defining something (e.g., Short stories with a moral are called fables).
- Impersonal scientific writing (e.g., Water is poured into the beaker).
- Historical writing (e.g., A great battle was fought at Panipat).
- Writing notices (e.g., A meeting will be held in the school hall tomorrow).
- Making announcements (e.g., The flight will be delayed by two hours).
- Making requests and invitations (e.g., The citizens are invited to the mayor's office today).
- Giving warnings or advice (e.g., Talking should be avoided).
Changing Active to Passive Voice
- Change the subject to the object.
- Change the object to the subject.
- Change the verb to its corresponding passive form.
- Add the appropriate helping verb (e.g., is, was, has been).
Common Misspelled Words
- Some words have different spellings based on their grammatical function (e.g., advice/advise, belief/believe, carrier/career).
- Rules for doubling consonants before adding suffixes:
- One-syllable words ending in one vowel + one consonant double the consonant (e.g., sit/sitting, beg/begged, run/running).
- Words of more than one syllable ending in one vowel + one consonant double the final consonant when a suffix beginning with a vowel is added (e.g., submit/submitting, occur/occurred).
- Words ending in a single 'l' double the 'l' when adding a suffix (e.g., control/controlled, signal/signaled, travel/traveler).
