Activation Functions

Activation functions are a crucial component of neural networks, as they introduce non-linearity into the model, allowing it to learn and represent more complex relationships between inputs and outputs.

Types of Activation Functions:

  1. Sigmoid:
    • Maps input to a value between 0 and 1
    • Used for binary classification problems
    • Has a smooth, S-shaped curve
    • Can be computationally expensive
  2. ReLU (Rectified Linear Unit):
    • Maps all negative values to 0 and all positive values to the same value
    • Fast and computationally efficient
    • Widely used in deep neural networks
    • Can result in "dead" neurons (i.e., neurons with output 0)
  3. Tanh (Hyperbolic Tangent):
    • Maps input to a value between -1 and 1
    • Similar to sigmoid, but with a larger range of output values
    • Can be more computationally expensive than ReLU
  4. Softmax:
    • Typically used as the output layer in classification problems
    • Maps input to a probability distribution over all classes
    • Ensures output values are all positive and sum to 1
  5. Leaky ReLU:
    • A variation of ReLU that allows a small fraction of the input to pass through
    • Helps to avoid "dead" neurons
  6. Swish:
    • A self-gated activation function that adaptively scales the input
    • Has been shown to be more effective than ReLU in some cases
  7. Softplus:
    • A smooth, continuous approximation of ReLU
    • Can be used in place of ReLU for a more continuous output

Properties of Activation Functions:

  • Non-linearity: Activation functions introduce non-linearity into the model, allowing it to learn and represent more complex relationships.
  • Differentiability: Most activation functions are differentiable, which is important for backpropagation and optimization.
  • Monotonicity: Some activation functions, such as ReLU, are monotonically increasing, while others, such as sigmoid, are not.
  • Computational efficiency: Some activation functions, such as ReLU, are computationally efficient, while others, such as sigmoid, can be more expensive.

Choosing an Activation Function:

  • The choice of activation function depends on the specific problem and the characteristics of the data.
  • Experimenting with different activation functions can help to improve the performance of the model.
  • ReLU is a popular default choice, but other activation functions may be more suitable for specific tasks.

Test your knowledge of different types of activation functions, their properties, and how to choose the right one for your neural network model. Learn about sigmoid, ReLU, tanh, softmax, leaky ReLU, swish, and softplus functions.
