Acquired (Adaptive) Immunity
- Specific immunity against invaders is called acquired or adaptive immunity.
- Two main types:
- Humoral immunity: B-cells produce antibodies (globulins) that attack invaders.
- Cell-mediated immunity: T-cells destroy invaders through cell-to-cell contact.
Antigens
- Acquired immunity is triggered by invaders.
- Each invader has unique chemical compounds (proteins or polysaccharides).
- These unique compounds are called antigens, triggering an immune response
- Antigens typically have a high molecular weight (8000 or above) for a substance to trigger an immune response
- Antigenicity depends on recurring molecular groups (epitopes) on the surface of the large molecule (proteins and polysaccharides are almost always antigenic).
