Antitussives

N-acetylcysteine is used as an emergency drug to treat cats that have ingested acetaminophen.
There are two general types of antitussives: central and peripheral.
In vet med, central antitussives are generally used.

Specific Medications

Butorphanol is a controlled substance, effective for dogs with collapsing trachea and kennel cough.
Dextromethorphan is commonly used for kennel cough, but human-labeled drugs may contain acetaminophen, which can be lethal in veterinary patients.
Methadone is an antitussive often used as an analgesic and pre-anesthetic for patients scheduled for surgery.
