    Study Notes

LPE2503 Academic Writing Lecture Notes 6 [Week 13-14]

    • Topics covered include sentence problems (subject-verb agreement, fragments, run-on and comma splice, parallelism), tenses, and vocabulary - word forms.

    Sentence Problems

    • Subject-Verb Agreement: Singular subjects require singular verbs; plural subjects require plural verbs. Phrases like "together with" or "as well as" do not change the number of the subject. "Neither" and "either" take singular verbs. When two or more singular subjects are joined by "and," use a plural verb.

    • Fragments: A fragment lacks a subject, verb, or complete thought. Example: Discovered the cure for the disease. (Missing subject).

    • Run-on and Comma Splices: A run-on joins two independent clauses without proper punctuation or conjunction. A comma splice joins two independent clauses only with a comma. Correcting these requires adding a period, semicolon, or conjunction. Examples: English is an important global language it is widely used for international trade and foreign investments. (Comma Splice).

    • Parallelism: Use parallel grammatical structure when comparing or listing items. Examples: reading, sleeping, and shopping; Malaysian, Singaporean and Vietnamese students; to observe, to listen, and to take notes.

    Tenses

    • Simple Present Tense: Used to describe facts, general truths, habitual actions and mental perceptions/opinions.

    • Simple Past Tense: Used for past events or actions.

    • Present Perfect Tense: Used for past actions with an effect on the present.

    Vocabulary - Word Forms

    • Using correct word forms (noun, verb, adjective, adverb) is crucial to convey intended meaning. The incorrect word form creates a grammatical error, as the word does not fit its position in the sentence.
