Study Notes

The Abrahamic Religions

  • The three Abrahamic religions - Judaism, Christianity, and Islam - all claim descent from Abraham and have a stake in the city of Jerusalem.

Judaism

  • Judaism is one of the oldest religions in the world, over 4,000 years old.
  • It started when God revealed himself to Abraham and commanded him to relocate to Canaan (now known as Israel).
  • Abraham's son Isaac and grandson Jacob were also important prophets in Judaism.
  • The Jews believe that God promised the land of Canaan to them, and they built their sacred temples in Jerusalem.
  • The Temple Mount on Mount Moriah is the holiest site in Judaism.
  • However, due to conflict, Jews are not allowed to pray at the Temple Mount.

Christianity

  • Christianity emerged later, with Jesus of Nazareth as its leader.
  • Jesus was a Jewish preacher who challenged Jewish law and eventually formed a separate religion.
  • Jesus' preaching was controversial, and he was eventually arrested and crucified in Jerusalem.
  • The Church of the Holy Sepulchre was built on the site of Jesus' crucifixion.
  • Christians follow both the Old and New Testaments.

Islam

  • The Prophet Muhammad founded Islam in the 7th century.
  • Muhammad received visions from the angel Gabriel, which became the Koran, the sacred book of Islam.
  • Islam emerged in Mecca, a city that was also a center of polytheism.
  • The Muslims worship one God, Allah, who is also revered by Christians and Jews.
  • The Koran is the Islamic Holy Book.
  • Muhammad's original intention was not to start a new religion, but his messages eventually became a new faith.
