Questions and Answers
Study Notes
Survey research is one of several commonly used methods in social science fields such as psychology and sociology, where researchers conduct surveys to gather data from large numbers of people. There are various types of surveys, including telephone, mail, online, personal interviews, self-administered questionnaires, etc., depending upon the nature of information required, type of population under study, cost involved, time schedule, etc.. Surveys can also be administered face-to-face, over the telephone, by mail, through the Internet, or via other means.
One important distinction between different forms of surveys relates to whether they are structured or unstructured:
- Structured surveys involve using predetermined questions based on the specific information researchers want to obtain from respondents.
- Unstructured surveys allow interviewees to provide any kind of answer they wish, making it more like an interview. This form of survey requires additional effort to record and analyze responses since answers may vary widely.
Another key aspect of conducting a successful survey involves selecting proper sample size and distribution. A well-designed survey will ensure that all relevant aspects of the phenomenon being studied are measured with sufficient reliability and validity. Furthermore, the process of designing surveys must carefully consider such issues as attitude scales, mode of administration, frame selection, level of measurement chosen, and possibly even sampling units of analysis.
In terms of effectiveness, when properly designed and implemented, surveys can yield useful results because they enable researchers to gather firsthand accounts of experiences and opinions directly from individuals living them. However, care must still be taken during both design and implementation stages to avoid misinterpretations stemming from ill-formed queries including ambiguous wording, double negatives, poor sequencing, etc. It's also essential to have knowledgeable staff supervisors who know how to interpret these responses correctly.
Survey research has been increasingly criticized as too costly while potentially providing less accurate information due to biases inherent within this method. Nonetheless, if conducted appropriately by experienced professionals with good instruments developed according to solid foundational principles, surveys remain powerful tools for collecting valuable data about attitudes and behavior patterns among populations.
