  • Gandhi moved to South Africa in 1893 to represent an Indian merchant in a lawsuit and began to employ nonviolent resistance.
  • In 1915, he returned to India and led the Indian National Congress, which campaigned for a variety of social reforms.
  • In 1947, India became independent, and the British Indian Empire was partitioned into India and Pakistan. Gandhi opposed the official celebration of independence and visited areas affected by religious violence.
  • In 1948, he began a long fast to pressure the Indian government to pay Pakistan some cash assets. He completed the fast in January 1949.
  • Gandhi died on January 30, 1948, at the age of 80.
