• To cope with possible changes that affect the innovation process, companies use scenarios to develop a view on the future.
• Scenarios can be used to gain information and even knowledge about the future which can be used to adjust the innovation process.
• However, little research has been done so far into how the future should be incorporated into innovation processes.
• The aim of this research is to investigate how commercial organisations use scenarios in innovation processes.
• Two case studies have been carried out, which have yielded key findings about the use of scenarios in innovation processes.
