Study Notes

  • The copywriter is the person who writes public-relations (or advertising) text.
  • The original definition of a copywriter was a person who wrote text for industrial producers to promote their products.
  • In the early 20th century, due to the spread of mail-order buying, many copywriters became entrepreneurs themselves and sold their own products or those of other suppliers.
  • With the advent of television and mass-consumption, copywriters began to specialize in producing short, “effect” phrases for television commercials and direct-mail ads.
  • Since the 1960s, copywriters have been employed by large advertising agencies, producing “image” ads.
  • Today, conversion copywriting is the most sophisticated form of persuasive writing, requiring writers to understand and guide the customer through the entire customer journey.
  • To be successful, small businesses still need to invest in “direct response” copywriting, which is usually done with paper materials.
  • When it comes to digital marketing, acquiring and retaining customers is more complex than simply producing persuasive text. Therefore, simple “response copy” (urging an immediate purchase) is no longer enough.
  • To be successful, copywriters must produce content that captures and guides the reader step-by-step through the customer journey. This is known as conversion copywriting.
  • The purpose of a text is to sell its contents to the reader.
  • The key to successful writing is to keep the reader interested and to sell them on the next paragraph.
  • Aristotle called this "ethos." It is the credibility a text can earn based on its content.
  • Texts must move the reader forward in the customer journey by converting them from readers to subscribers or customers.
