21st Century Literature
- Refers to literary works written and published from 2001 onwards.
- Often characterized by gender sensitivity, technological allusions, cultural pluralism, exploration of extreme reality or fiction, and questioning of established norms.
- Driven by advancements in technology facilitating the transmission and preservation of traditions.
- This led to the emergence of new literary genres.
Early Literary Genres
- Characterized by oral tradition, a form of human communication where knowledge, art, ideas, and cultural material are received, transmitted, and preserved orally from one generation to another.
- Examples include:
- Pastime: riddles, puzzles
- Courtship: serenade (harana)
- Chores: lullaby, hele, uyayi, harvest song
- Beliefs: superstitions, chants, hymns, rituals
- Stories of creation: legends (alamat), myths (mito), epic (epiko)
- Observations and experiences: songs about nature/experiences
- Physical exercise/memorization: songs that enumerate and kids memorize
- Folklore: stories with morals (no definite author) (kwentong bayan & fable (pabula).
Tanaga
- Indigenous Filipino poem traditionally used in Tagalog.
- Consists of four lines, each with seven syllables.
- Examples of characteristics:
- Stanzaic, written in any number of quatrains.
- Rhymes: originally aaaa, bbbb, cccc etc., modern 4 lines.
- Examples of rhyming patterns: aabb ccdd etc., abba cddc etc.
- Syllabic, 7-7-7-7 syllables per line
- Uses metaphor liberally.
- May or may not have a title
Poetry in the 21st Century
- Frank Rivera's, known as "Makata sa cellphone", adapted the word "tanaga" to "Textula" resembling Japanese word.
Textula
- A blend of English "text" and Filipino "tula" (poem)
- Mobile phone text-style poem.
- Usually consists of one or two stanzas and directly communicated to a recipient.
- Patterns, rhymes, and line numbers have evolved over time, providing more freedom in terms of length, rhyme, and patterns.
Microliterature
- Body of short articles/publications, each with minimal new information.
- Shared on social media platforms (Twitter and Instagram).
- Enables sharing of captured moments and efficient access.
Instapoetry
- Poetry shared on Twitter
Twitterature
- Literary use of Twitter's microblogging service.
- Includes various genres such as aphorisms, poetry, and fiction.
- Written by individuals or collaboratively.
- Uses the 280-character limit (upgraded from 140 characters in late 2017).
Hyperpoetry
- Poems shared in cyberspace and rely on qualities unique to a digital environment like sound and movement.
Creative Nonfiction
- Also known as literary nonfiction or narrative nonfiction.
- Uses literary styles/techniques to create factually-accurate narratives.
- Contrasts with other nonfiction genres like technical writing or journalism as it prioritizes its craft's style and tone.
- Emerging genre, often scrutinized with the analytical lens used for fiction/poetry.
- Can take many forms: e.g., essay, journal article, research paper, memoir, poem.
- Can be personal or not, or both.
Emerging Literary Genres
- Includes Traditional Fiction (stories passed down through generations – folklore, fairy tales, folktales, fable, myth, epic, legend), Speculative Fiction (Fantasy – often impossible or improbable, Science Fiction(Sci-Fi) – based on imagined future advances/changes, Horror – intended to frighten/disgust/startle, Utopian – takes place in a highly desirable society) and others: Dystopian, Alternate History, Apocalyptic Post-Apocalyptic, Superhero, Supernatural
Chick Literature
- Heroine-centered narratives focusing on the characters' trials/tribulations.
- Addresses issues of modern womanhood – romantic relationships, friendships, and workplace matters.
- Presented in a humorous and lighthearted approach.
Feminist Literature
- Supports feminist ideals/goals: defining, establishing and defending civil, political, economic and social rights for women.
- Often portrays men negatively due to highlighting gender inequality in roles, status, privilege, and power; the consequences of these power dynamics are depicted negatively for all.
