Ordinary Why I Didn’t Go to School (3) 1 (4) 6 2 5 4 3 August’s one wish is to have a normal face. He wants a normal looking face, so that others won’t stare at him so much. August is very scared about starting 5th grade. He never went to school before because of all his 27 surgeries. August says that he is the ONLY ONE who realizes how ordinary he is. August did have a few friends; Christopher, Zachary, and Alex. Christopher moved far away, and others are too busy for him now. August got used to pretending he doesn’t see other people staring at him. Via (his sister) doesn’t pretend… she gets annoyed by them. His mom used to homeschool August. She is an illustrator for children’s books. Wonder How I Came to Life Christopher’s House Part #1 #2 (6) 1 (8) 6 2 5 4 3 When August was born, he was taken out of the room – his dad rushed after them and dropped and broke his camera. August clearly states that he does not want to go to school. He is not ready for that. Last spring, while at Christopher’s house, August overheard his Mom talking about school. Nate (August’s dad) respects August’s decision about not going to school. Mom wants him to go and learn more things. The cranky kid doctor fainted! The farting nurse kept kicking him and yelling, “What kind of a doctor are you!” She kept on farting all the time. When August was still in mom’s stomach, the doctors knew there was something wrong, but they didn’t think it was that bad. Wonder Driving Paging Mr. Tushman Part #1 #3 (10) 1 (15) 6 2 5 4 3 August learns that Mom and Dad already met the principal, Mr. Tushman. August even took the admissions test and got a great score. Mr. Tushman informs August that they have many school programs that August will love. August will get a tour around the school. August meets Mr. Tushman. He notices that the principal looks like a normal guy and treats August normally. He likes Mr. Tushman. August’s Dad is being silly and jokes about Mr. Tushman’s name and an old teacher called Mrs. Butt. August laughs and feels better about school. Mom tries to convince August that going to school will make him ready for life and will make him smarter. August and his family are driving home from Christopher’s house. Mom and Dad are talking about August and his life. Nice Mrs. Garcia Jack Will, Julian, and Charlotte (17) 1 (19) 6 2 5 4 3 August meets Mrs. Garcia. He noticed that when Mrs. Garcia saw him, she dropped her eyes and then gave him a “shiny smile”. Mr. Tushman introduces Jack, Julian, and Charlotte. He tells them to take August on a tour around school. August explains that he doesn’t like meeting new big kids because big kids can be mean. The moment August heard kids talking, he became very nervous and scared. He did not want to meet anyone. Everybody follows Mr. Tushman to his office. There, August notices many cool things and a funny portrait of Mr. Tushman that looks like a pumpkin. August explains that the reason he let his hair grow long was because he likes when his hair covers his face, and can “block out the things I don’t want to see”. The Grand Tour The Performance Space (24) 1 (27) 6 2 5 4 3 Jack and August smile to each other. Jack says that Julian is a jerk. Later, August corrects Julian’s word and then Julian ‘cuts’ in front of August and almost makes him fall. Charlotte stands up for August. She patiently explains to him what’s a homeroom. She is very nice to August. August says he will take the Science elective. Julian didn’t believe he was smart enough to be in the science elective. Julian asks August about his face; if he was in a fire. Both Jack and Charlotte yell at Julian for being so rude. They enter the performance space. Charlotte talks constantly about Oliver, the play from last year. She proposes the theater-arts elective. All four kids begin the tour. They visit room 301 (their homeroom) and the science lab. Julian does not treat August very nicely. The Deal Home (31) (33) 1 6 2 5 3 Mom asks if August saw the cute baby chicks. August did not help Henry because of the backpack. All kids enter the classroom. August chooses the seat in the back, so kids wouldn’t stare at him. Nobody wanted to sit by August. It’s the first day of school and August feels very nervous. Everybody pretends to be happy and excited. We learn that the braid is like the Padawan from Star Wars. August went next. He said he has a sister named Via and a dog named Daisy. He was very nervous. Ms. Petosa tells students about herself. Then she gives out directions for “Around the Room”-each student has to say 2 things about themselves.
