Necrosis Necrosis rapid death of a limited area; final stage in irreversible degeneration Necrobiosis – term used for the entire process of degeneration and death of cells Gross characteristic- pale, soft and friable and sharply demarcated from viable tissue by zone of inflammation There should be sharpline demarcation between viable and necrotic tissue to differentiate from auutolysis Necrosis Cellular characteristics of necrosis pyknosis – condensation of nuclear chromatin into dark, round, homogenous mass smaller than nucleus Karyorrhexis – splitting of the nucleus into numerous pieces; implies sudden death Karyolysis – dissolution of nuclear chromatin, leaving a hollow, large, round ghost nucleus Acknowledgement: Paul Hanna of Atlantic Veterinary College University of Prince Edward Island
