# UNIT 3: - Industrial Pollution and Sustainable Chemistry ## Green Chemistry: - The branch of science that deals with the design of chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances. ## Prevention 1. It is better to prevent waste than to treat or clean up waste after it has been created. 2. The waste produced if dumped on land, air or water or release in the air, it will result in the pollution of soil, water, or air. 3. The environmental factor or E-factor was developed to measure or estimate the amount of waste. E factor = mass of waste / mass of product 4. Prevention is to lower the E-factor. 5. Green Chemistry suggests the chemical synthesis pathways for products without forming waste. ## High Atom Economy 1. The reaction for synthesis of products suggested by green chemistry such that all reactants are converted to products without or very less by products. 2. In high atom economy all starting materials and reagent converted into final product. 3. Addition reactions, Diels-Alder reactions are having 100% atom economy: $CH_2 = CH_2 + 1/2 O_2 → CH_2CH_2$ $ + CH_2$ $ CH_2$ 1,3-butadiene $ → $ cyclohexane $O$ $ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ ||$ $ \ \ \ \ \ \ CH_2$ Ethylene oxide ## Less Hazardous Chemical Synthesis 1. The most important principle of green chemistry is to prevent or at least minimize the formation of hazardous products. 2. Whenever practically synthesis method should be selected in such a way to generate little or no toxicity to human health and environment. 3. The aim is to avoid using hazardous chemicals as starting points. If safer alternatives are used. ## Use of Safer Solvents and Auxiliaries 1. Use of auxiliaries substance like solvents, separating agent should be avoided whenever possible. 2. Many reactions require the use of solvents which can have a number of hazardous and some of them carcinogenic in nature thus should be avoided. 3. If solvents is necessary water is good medium & ECO-friendly solvents. For e.g., dry-cleaning of fabrics, toxic solvents per chloroethylene was used which is replaced by liquid CO2 ## Designing of Safe Safer Chemicals 1. Chemical products must be designed to effect their desired function while minimizing their toxicity. 2. The design of safer chemical having with having knowledge of how chemicals act on our body and environment. 3. For e.g., Antibiotics have more side effects on human body and safer antibiotics with negligible side effects are green to use. ## Design for Energy Efficiency 1. Energy requirements of a reaction should be minimum. 2. The chemical synthesis should be carried out at ordinary temperature and pressure condition. 3. This can be achieved by * Use of proper catalyst enzymes. * Use of microorganisms for organic synthesis. * Use of renewable starting materials instead of non-renewable materials. ## Use of Renewable Feedstock: - A new material or feedstock should be renewable rather than non-renewable. - Generally chemical products devised from crude oil & used in chemical process as starting materials but these are non-renewable. ## Traditional Pathway $ \ \ \ Ni + 3H_2$ $ A1_2O_3$ Benzene $ → $ $ \ \ \ \ \ \ co catalyst $ $ \ \ \ \ \ \ O_2 $ $ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ O$ $ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ ||$ $ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ C$ $ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ / \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ $ $ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ CH_2 –CH_2 - Unnecessary derivatives i.e., use of blocking groups, temporary modification should be minimized or avoided because this requires more regents, generate waste, cost consume time and add to the cost of the products. 2. In others, would a chemical preparation should be carried out in lesser number of steps. For example: The manufacturing of Ibuprofen is a 6-step process by tradition method. 3. By using anhydrous HF, the process minimize to 3-step which are…. ## Use of Catalysts 1. Use of catalyst should be preferred whenever possible. 2. The use of catalyst can enable reactions with higher atom economy. 3. Catalyst makes the reaction faster, decrease the energy requirement and can produce single product and minimize waste. 4. Catalyst themselves aren’t used up by chemical process, therefore, it can be recycled many times and do not contribute to waste. For e.g., Better yields can achieve during hydrogenation of propene in presence of nickel catalyst. $CH3 - CH=CH2 + H2 \ \ \ \ \ Ni \
