D Unit 2 Practice Test – Biological Bases of Behavior Introduction Mobile Gamer Central (MGC) is a video game company that is interested in finding out which kind of marketing is most likely to cause a potential customer to purchase their game. A debate exists in the company whether it is better to provide potential customers with the opportunity to play a demo of the game or to rely upon a video advertisement of the game. The CEO of the company decides to test his hypothesis that actually playing the video game demo is the best way to increase the likelihood of a potential customer purchasing the game. Participants MGC put an ad online in an effort to obtain subjects for their study. The first 100 people that responded with interest were selected to participate. Of the 100 participants, all were under the age of 30. 75 of the participants were male and 25 of the participants were female. Method Marketing researchers for MGC assign half of the participants to play the video game demo themselves for 10 minutes, while the other half of participants watch a 90 second ad of the game’s key moments. Participants rate how likely they are to buy the game on a scale of 1 (not likely) through 10 (very likely). Results are presented in the table below. At the conclusion of this study, participants were informed that they were being tested to see which marketing technique might make them more likely to be interested in purchasing the game. Results and Discussion Participants’ Observed the Game Ad Personally Played Game Rating (n = 50) (n = 50) Mean 6.31 2.04 Standard 1.25 0.80 Deviation Unit 2 Practice Test – Biological Bases of Behavior A. Identify the research method used in the study. How do you know this? ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ B. State the operational definition of the dependent variable. ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ C. Describe the meaning of the differences between standard deviations in the study. ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ D. Identify one ethical guideline that was properly applied by the researchers. ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ E. Explain the extent to which the research finding may or may not be generalizable using specific and relevant evidence from the study. ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ F. Explain how one of the research findings supports or refutes the researcher’s hypothesis that actually playing the video game demo would make participants more likely to buy the game. ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ Part A Part B Part C Part D Part E Part F Points 2 1 2 1 2 2 Possible Points Earned Unit 2 Practice Test – Biological Bases of Behavior A – Experiment, manipulation of variables, two experimental groups (no control). B – Rating on a scale of 1-10 of how likely they are to buy the game. C – Participants that personally played the game had a smaller standard deviation, meaning that their ratings were more similar to one another. D – Debriefing was used to inform the participants of the true nature of the experiment. E – The results are not very generalizable because they only used participants under 30. The participants were also disproportionally men. F – Refutes the hypothesis because the mean score of those who watched the ad was higher than those who actually played the game.
