Quiz Tuesday September 17, 2024 Science Quiz Review Unit 1: Plants 1. Plant Parts and Their Functions: Flower: Reproductive part of the plant. Leaf: The organ attached to the stem or branches.Functions include: ○ Photosynthesis: Process by which plants use sunlightto make their own food. ○ Respiration: The exchange of gases. ○ Transpiration: The process of water evaporation fromthe plant. Fruit: Contains seeds. Vegetable: Edible part of the plant, such as roots, stems, or leaves. Stem: Grows in the opposite direction to roots, seekinglight. It supports the plant and transports water and nutrients. Roots: Composed of main root, root tip, and root hair.Functions: ○ Absorb water and nutrients from the soil. ○ Anchor the plant. Example Question: What does the leaf do in photosynthesis? Answer: It helps the plant make food using sunlight. 2. Classification of Plants: Vascular Plants: Have a pipe system (xylem and phloem)to transport water and nutrients. ○ Examples: Trees, flowers. ○ Reproduction: Can reproduce through seeds (angiospermsand gymnosperms). Nonvascular Plants: Do not have a pipe system. Smallplants that usually grow in wet areas like rainforests. ○ Example: Moss. Example Question: What is the difference between vascular and nonvascular plants? Answer: Vascular plants have a pipe system to carry water and nutrients, nonvascular plants do not. Quiz Tuesday September 17, 2024 3. Reproduction in Vascular Plants: Plants with Seeds: Divided into two groups: ○ Angiosperms: Produce flowers; seeds are inside fruits. Classified intomonocotsanddicots. ○ Gymnosperms: Seeds are not enclosed in a fruit (e.g.,pine trees). Example Question: How are angiosperms different from gymnosperms? Answer: Angiosperms have seeds inside fruits, while gymnosperms have seeds exposed, often in cones. 4. Flower Parts: Stamen: The male part of the flower, made of a filamentand anther, which produces pollen. Sepals: Small green leaves at the base of the flower. Petals: The colorful part of the flower. A group ofpetals is called the corolla. Pistil: The female reproductive structure, composedof: ○ Style: Tube connecting the stigma to the ovary. ○ Stigma: Receives pollen during pollination. ○ Ovary: Contains the seeds. Example Question: What part of the flower produces pollen? Answer: The anther, which is part of the stamen. 5. Pollination: Pollination happens when pollen grains are transferred from one flower's anther to another flower's stigma. Quiz Tuesday September 17, 2024 Pollinators: Wind, water, insects (like bees), birds, bats, and other animals help move pollen. Example Question: Name one pollinator that helps in the pollination of flowers. Answer: Bees or birds.
