# The Mission of the Church comes from God ## **The Source of Mission** Mission springs from the Triune God's loving design for all humanity. God's mission is the restoration & reconciliation of all people to unity with God through sending His only begotten Son. In John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life," this proves how God loves us. ## **Commissioned by Christ** The Risen Christ himself calls His followers to share His redemptive mission. John 20:21, "As the Father sent me, so I send you." "...that they all may be one just as we are one..." (John 20:21-23) "be perfect as He is perfect, be holy as He is holy, be merciful as He is merciful, be one as He is one." ## **Missioned Empowered by the Holy Spirit** Acts 2:4, "And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance." Galatians 5:22, "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance..." Galatians 5:26, "If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit." In the spirit, the proclaiming community itself becomes a living gospel for all to hear. ## **The Baptized and Mission** Baptism came from the greek word "baptizo" which means "to immerse" while in Hebrew it is referred as Mikveh-an immersion. Baptism is an act of obedience that should be an immediate part of our acceptance of the gift of grace offered by Jesus Christ. It is coming into the Body of Christ a dwelling place of the Holy Spirit, knowing God as their Father. It is also God's own ministry of transformation, reconciliation, healing and salvation of the world. # Types of Baptism 1. **Water Baptism** (cleansing) 2. **Spirit Baptism** (Holy Spirit) 3. **Fire Baptism** "... I indeed baptize you with water ; ... he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire." Luke 3:16 ## **Water Baptism** 1. Death 2. Burial 3. Resurrection ## **Spirit Baptism** Involves being covered with, immersed in, empowered by the Holy Spirit- the basis of our life in Christ and our connection to God. ## **Fire Baptism** 1. A symbol of purification of sin 2. A symbol of tongues of fire 3. A prophecy of separation of righteous from the unrighteous "... For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body..." (1 Corinthians 12:12-13) ## How are we to be baptized? "... be baptized everyone of you in the name of Jesus Christ..." Acts 2:38 "As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water." Matthew 3:16 ## **When are we to be baptized?** "Those who accepted His message were baptized..." Acts 2:41 ## Is it necessary for believers to be baptized? Acts 22:15:16, "... get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on His name." Romans 6:4, "Therefore, we are buried with Him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk on newness of life." 2 Corinthians 5:17, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come." # END
