In 374, after the bishop of Milan died, heretics sought a new bishop who shared their beliefs. The election in the basilica turned chaotic, prompting Ambrose to restore order. His faith and wisdom impressed many, leading to his election as bishop. Initially shocked and unbaptized, he eventually accepted the role. He was baptized and later ordained as a priest and bishop. As bishop, Ambrose defended the divinity of Christ against Arianism. He delivered persuasive homilies and converted Saint Augustine of Hippo. Ambrose died in 397 and was canonized, with a feast day on December 7.
