RECENA OVERVIEW OF ROMANTIC MUSIC ROMANTIC MUSIC - He BRIDGED the GAP in the TRANSITION of music from the CLASSICAL to the ROMANTIC period. - His latter works made him the PIONEER of Romanticism in LUDWIG VAN music. BEETHOVEN ROMANTIC MUSIC - The composers of this era still served the NOBLES and ARISTOCRATS of EUROPE. - Performances were no longer intended for amateurs but demand a HIGHER SKILL for untrained performers. - MEN mostly dominate the MUSIC SCENE but names like CLARA SCHUMANN and FANNY MENDELSSOHN also made their way as composers. ROMANTIC MUSIC - Music as an INDUSTRY was the MAIN REASON why composers would write music in this period. - Composers, publishers, and concert managers had to SELL their work so music will have a wider patronage especially among the people living in the countryside. - Music during the Romantic period (1820-1900) made the musicians DISCOVER their INNER SELF. It was also during this period that musicians experienced PERSONAL FORMS OF ART. PURPOSE OF MUSIC PURPOSE OF MUSIC - Composers during the Romantic period created MUSIC that AROUSED and EXPLORED HUMAN FEELINGS. - Musical forms such as the OPERA, BALLETS, SYMPHONIC POEM, and PIANO MUSIC were just among works of art that flourished during this time. PURPOSE OF MUSIC - Music were sometimes EXPERIMENTAL. SOCIAL DANCING helped the composers ADVERTISE dance music. - The best example of dance music was the WALTZ that gave way for the STRAUSS’ FAME AND FORTUNE - CHURCH MUSIC was no longer the center of their subject because musicians would rather cater to the AUDIENCE'S REQUEST to earn an income. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ROMANTIC PERIOD MUSIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE ROMANTIC MUSIC ELEMENTS OF MUSIC CHARACTERISTICS - IRREGULAR RHYTHM - COMPLEX - FULL OF EMOTION MELODY - TELLS A STORY / PAINT A PICTURE HARMONY - TONAL - HOMOPHONIC TEXTURE - HEAVY, COMBINATION OF VOCAL AND INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC - PIANO AS AN INSTRUMENT IS HIGHLIGHTED - ORCHESTRA INSTRUMENTATION / TONE COLOR - LIED - OPERA COMPOSERS OF THE INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC ROMANTIC MUSIC - He began taking piano lessons with his aunt at an EARLY AGE OF TWO and made his first performance at the AGE OF TEN. - At 13, he studied organ and composition at the PARIS CONSERVATORY. By his early twenties, he was admired and supported by notable musicians like CAMILLE SAINT- Berlioz, ,Liszt, Guonod, Rossini and others. SAËNS (1835-1921) ROMANTIC MUSIC - Perhaps, the SADDEST chapter in Saint- Saëns life was when his TWO SONS DIED six weeks apart. However, it was during this period that he produced some of his famous works such as the Danse Macabre (1874) and Samson and Delilah(1877). -He was both a VIRTUOSO PIANIST and composer. His other famous works are the CARNIVAL OF THE ANIMALS, The Swan, CAMILLE SAINT- and other operas, symphonies, and SAËNS (1835-1921) concertos. ROMANTIC MUSIC - He was a FRENCH COMPOSER who at a young age learned to play the FLUTE and GUITAR. He first studied MEDICINE but later abandoned it because of his LOVE FOR MUSIC. - He is one of the famous composers of PROGRAM SYMPHONY. One of his famous works is the SYMPHONIE FANTASTIQUE where he narrated his HECTOR BERLIOZ views in LIFE AND LOVE. (1803-1869) ROMANTIC MUSIC - His other famous works include: THE TROJANS, choral: THE DAMNATION OF FAUST; and overtures: LE CARNAVAL ROMAIN. HECTOR BERLIOZ (1803-1869) ROMANTIC MUSIC - He came from a PROMINENT GERMAN FAMILY and grew up in a PRIVILEGED environment where children are encouraged to develop their GIFTS. - He studied music under a BEST TEACHER who made him the FINEST PIANIST of his era. - At the age of 9, he made his PUBLIC DEBUT in Berlin. At 12, he wrote a handful FELIX MENDELSSOHN of OPERAS, SYMPHONIES for string (1809-1847) ORCHESTRAS, SONATAS, and FUGUES. ROMANTIC MUSIC - Aside from being a brilliant composer, Mendelssohn was also an ACTIVE CONDUCTOR. He conducted Bach's St. Matthew Passion in Berlin. This performance led to other great opportunities making him one of the most popular composers during the Romantic era. - One of his best known works was the FELIX MENDELSSOHN Overture to A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S (1809-1847) DREAM (1826). ROMANTIC MUSIC - The COUPLE are both brilliant, gifted, and unique in the history of music. They have earned a distinct place in Western music. - Robert studied music under FRIEDRICH WIECK, the FATHER OF CLARA. His LOVE for her was STRONGLY OPPOSED by her father but in spite of opposition, the two got married and had SIX CHILDREN. ROBERT AND CLARA Robert COMPOSES while Clara SCHUMANN PERFORMS. ROMANTIC MUSIC - Robert’s famous works include the SYMPHONIC STUDIES, CARNAVAL AND FANTASIE IN C. Clara Schumann, on the other hand, was considered as one of the PROMINENT PIANIST during the Romantic era. She was the first to perform publicly the works of JOHANNES BRAHMS. - Robert died at the age of 46. While Clara ROBERT AND CLARA lived to be 76 and became an influential SCHUMANN member of the society. ROMANTIC MUSIC - He was a GERMAN composer who was taught by his FATHER the piano, theory, and composition. - He was a PIANIST before he became a COMPOSER. During his many years as an accompanist, he was introduced to other great musicians like Liszt and Schumann. - He was known as a MASTER OF SYMPHONIC AND SONATA STYLE. Among JOHANNES BRAHMS his famous works are the Academic Festival Overture and Hungarian Dances. ROMANTIC MUSIC - He was called “THE DEVIL'S VIOLINIST" for his amazing and extraordinary talent in playing the violin. - Those who were able to witness his performance thought that Paganini made a PACT WITH THE DEVIL to be able to perform supernatural display of technique. - He first learned to play the MANDOLIN at NICCOLO PAGANINI age 5 and moved to the VIOLIN at the age (1782-1840) of 7. ROMANTIC MUSIC - He became an ACCOMPLISHED VIOLINIST at 13 and started composing at the age of 19. - He was considered the GREATEST VIOLINIST OF ALL TIME. One of his famous works was the 24 CAPRICES FOR SOLO VIOLIN. Another composition he had was the WITCHES DANCE OR LE STREGHE. NICCOLO PAGANINI (1782-1840) ROMANTIC MUSIC He developed the following violin techniques: - impossible fingerings - scordatura - double, triple, and quadruple stops - ricochet bowing - complicated harmonics and double stop harmonics - multiple trills NICCOLO PAGANINI - double stop octave runs (1782-1840) - right and left hand pizzicato Holy Rosary College of Sta.
