HUMAN FLOURISHING IN PROGRESS AND DE-DEVELOPMENT GROUP 4 OUR TEAM Cristamae Oli SD. Domingo Sharon Dela Cruz Marinella Delos Reyes Andrealyn Diaz INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES AT THE END OF THIS UNIT, THE STUDENTS SHOULD BE ABLE TO: Discuss human flourishing in the context of progress in science and technology; Explain de-development as a progress and development framework; and Differentiate between traditional frameworks of progress and development and hickels concept of de-development. FIRST REPORTER CRISTAMAE OLI SD. DOMINGO WHO IS JASON HICKEL? Dec. 26, 1982 41 years old University of Virginia (2011) and Wheaton College (2004) Anthropologists and Archeologists Professor at The Autonomous University of Barcelona KEY CONCEPTS HUMAN FLOURISHING This concept is central to our understanding of what it means to live a good and meaningful life. It asks us to consider whether advancements in science, technology, and economic growth truly enhance our well-being or merely add to our material wealth. DE-DEVELOPMENT FRAMEWORK Introduced by Jason Hickel, this framework challenges the idea that development equates to continuous economic growth. Instead, it advocates for rich countries to reduce their consumption to sustainable levels, addressing both global inequality and environmental sustainability. “FORGET DEVELOPING POOR COUNTRIES IT’S TIME TO DE-DEVELOP RICH COUNTRIES” -Jason Hickel SHARON DELA CRUZ CRITIQUES OF TRADITIONAL GROWTH MODELS AND THE LIMITS FAILURE OF TRADITIONAL GROWTH Despite decades of emphasis on economic growth as a solution to poverty, the gap between rich and poor countries continues to widen. ENVIRONMENTAL LIMITS The Earth has a finite capacity to support human activity, and our current levels of consumption are unsustainable. MARINELLA DELOS REYES DE-DEVELOPMENT AS AN ALTERNATIVE RETHINKING PROGRESS We need to question whether the continuous pursuit of economic growth truly benefits society. The de- development framework suggests that instead of poorer countries trying to catch up with richer ones, perhaps richer countries should “catch down” to more sustainable levels. S USTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT EXAMPLES Some countries have achieved high levels of well-being without the excessive consumption seen in wealthier nations. ANDREALYN DIAZ CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES PERCEPTION OF DE- DEVELOPMENT It’s important to recognize that the term “de-development” might seem negative, especially to those in wealthy countries. It challenges long-held beliefs about progress, making it a tough concept to promote. ALTERNATIVE MODELS Concepts like “buen vivir,” rooted in indigenous cultures of Latin America, focus on living well in harmony with nature rather than prioritizing endless economic growth.
