Total fitness cover nutritional, spiritual, medical, emotional mental, social and physical well-being. It is all about being able to live and cope well with the demands of environment. PHYSICAL FITNESS Physical Fitness can be broken down into following concepts: ✓ A person should possess ENOUGH STRENGHT, POWER, ENDURANCE, FLEXIBILITY, AGILITY, COORDINATION, BALANCE, SPEED ✓ He/ She should be FREE FROM DISEASES ✓ He/ She should HAVE A WELL-DEVELOP BODY WITH POWER PROPORTIONS OF BONES, MUSCLES AND FAT TISSUE. Therefore in general, Physical fitness is the ability of the body to perform one’s daily task efficiently and effectively without undue fatigue and has extra reserve energy to meet unforeseen emergencies. Based on this definition, there are (3) three important aspects that an individual should be able to meet in order to be considered physically fit. These include: 1. Being able to perform one`s daily task without getting too tired before the end of the day. 2. Enjoying leisure time in some of recreational activities. 3. Meeting emergency demands. COMPONENTS OF PHYSICAL FITNESS The components of Physical Fitness are divided into two categories the health-related components ( Flexibity, Cardiovascular Endurance, Muscular Strength, Nuscular Endurance and Body Composition) and the performance- related components (Agility, Balance, Coordination, Power, Reaction Time and Speed). I. Health- Related Fitness - Is a function of body`s adaptation to exercise. It could be developed and maintain through the regular and proper exercise program. 3 A. Muscular Strength Refers to the ability of the muscle to exert maximum effort in brief duration. It may be developed through isotonic, isometric or isokinetic contractions. 1. Isotonic Contractions are voluntary contractions in which muscles shorten and lengthen alternately 2. Isometric Contractions are types of contraction which the muscles are contracted against an immovable resistance 3. Isokinetic Contractions are similar to isotonic contractions but the muscles are exposed to fixed machines with variables degrees of resistance. B. Muscular Endurance Refer to the ability of the muscle to endure a sub maximal effort for a prolonged period of time. C. Cardiovascular Refers to the ability of the heart, blood vessels and Endurance the lungs to adapt to physical exertion for prolonged duration. D. Flexibility The ability of the muscles and joints to go through full range motion It involves four basic movements 1. Flexion 2. Extension 3. Abduction 4. adduction E. Body Composition Refer to the proportion if the lea body mass to fat body mass Somatotypes A system of classifying an individual according to the shape of the body. Physique of the body may be categorized into three distinct types: 1. Ectomorph- small body 2. Mesomorph- normal body 3. Endomorph- large body II. Performance/Skills Related Components - It refers to the quality of one`s movement skills. It includes 6 general components namely: Agility- THE ABILITY TO RAPIDLY AND ACCURATELY CHANGE THE DIRECTION OF MOVEMENT OF THE ENTIRE BODY IN SPACE Balance- THE MAINTENANCE OF EQUILIBRIUM WHILE STATIONARY OR WHILE MOVING Coordination- THE ABILITY TO USE THE SENSES WITH THE BODY PARTS TO PERFORM MOTOR TASK SMOOTHLY AND ACCURATELY. Power-. THE ABILITY TO TRANSFER THE ENERGY INTO FORCE AT A FACTS RATE 4 Reaction THE TIME ELAPSED BETWEEN STIMULATION AND THE Time- BEGINNING REACTION. Speed- THE ABILITY TO PERFORM MOVEMENT IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. Benefits of Physical Activity 1. Improves strength and endurance 2. Helps build healthy bones and muscles 3. Helps control weight 4. Reduces anxiety and stress and increases self esteem 5. May improve blood pressure and cholesterol level. 5
