Movement Literacy Learning Objectives: At the end of the one-hour interactive discussion, 75% of the students are expected to: a. Define Optimum Performance Pyramid; b. Explain the importance of understanding Optimum Performance Pyramid; and c. Perform specific exercises aligned to Optimum Performance Pyramid. Physical literacy involves developing the abilities, understanding, and behaviors that empower individuals to confidently and enthusiastically engage in physical activities. Everyone has the capacity to appreciate, cultivate, and sustain positive physical activity habits throughout their lives. Physical literacy encompasses comprehensive lifelong learning through movement and physical activity. It provides benefits for physical, psychological, social, and cognitive health and well-being. Physical literacy equips individuals with the: Physical skills and fitness needed for activity The attitudes and emotions that drive motivation The knowledge and understanding of movement; and The social skills to engage in activities with others. As our energy is sourced from a balanced plate of food, nutrition plays an essential role in our physical fitness too. Without nutritious food, physical fitness cannot be achieved. Food is the fuel of our body. Food with high nutritional content boosts our stamina and helps us exercise better. It is scientifically proven that nutrition can help you enhance your physical health, athletic performance, and fitness. Optimum Performance Pyramid The Functional Pyramid is a guide to ensure athletes are prepared for their specific sports. Focusing too much on one area can result in athletes being either too strong or too weak, or too skilled or not skilled enough. Ultimately, power and skill can't replace the importance of individual movement patterns. Creating a balanced training program is essential and is the top priority in the Central Strength & Conditioning Program. Optimum Performance Pyramid Optimum Performance Pyramid The first step in the pyramid is Functional Movement, which forms the basis of all sports. It involves our body's ability to perform essential movements like squatting, stepping, and lunging. To develop these patterns effectively, it's crucial to enhance joint stability, mobility, balance, and flexibility. Our warm-up routines and exercises are designed to improve these fundamental movement skills. Optimum Performance Pyramid The second step in the pyramid is Functional Performance, which involves performing the movement patterns from the first step with power and efficiency. These actions can be measured through tests or by observing performance improvements during training sessions. Strength, power, speed, and agility are evaluated at specific times throughout the year. Our program aims to enhance these components using periodization techniques in 4 to 8-week cycles. Optimum Performance Pyramid The final step of the pyramid focuses on Functional Skill, which refers to specific abilities needed for sports. As the sports season nears, it's important to place greater emphasis on developing these skills. Optimum Performance Pyramid Optimum Performance Pyramid Conclusion Physical or Movement literacy involves developing basic human movements, fundamental skills, and foundational sports abilities. These skills equip individuals with the tools needed to participate in physical activities that enhance health throughout their lives. Australian Sports Commission. (n.d.). Physical literacy.
