They find Mr Bumble and tell him that Oliver went mad. - Mr Bumble tells them to leave Oliver alone and give him soup and nothing else. - Oliver cries for the first time. He is alone in the shop among the coffins. - He ties his few clothes in a handkerchief. - He waits for morning and runs away as soon as he sees the first light of day. - Oliver runs away from his new home. ## Chapter 4 - London - He leaves the town and heads towards London. - He meets Dick on the road. - Dick tells Oliver to leave quickly because he is dying. - Oliver says goodbye to his old friend and continues to walk towards London. - He has a piece of dry bread, two pairs of socks, an old shirt and one penny. - He walks 20 miles that day. - He sleeps outside in a field. - He wakes up tired and hungry. - He has to spend his penny on bread the next day. - He is hungry and tired. - He sits on a doorstep in the town of Barnet. - He watches a coach and horse go past. - A strange boy asks what the problem is and gives him food. - The boy tells Oliver to come with him to an inn. ## Chapter 5 - Fagin - Oliver meets the boy, Jack Dawkins. - Jack Dawkins takes him to London. - They go to a dirty, narrow street. - Oliver feels scared. - Jack Dawkins pulls Oliver into a house. - The house is dark and has rough beds on the floor. - Fagin is an old man with red hair. - He is watching a line of handkerchiefs. - The boys smoke long pipes. - Oliver sits down with the boys for a meal. - They give Oliver a bed on the floor. - Oliver falls asleep. - Fagin is secretly stealing watches and jewels from a box. - Oliver sees what Fagin is doing. - Fagin threatens Oliver with a knife. - Fagin tells Oliver he will teach him how to steal. ## Chapter 6 - Oliver Among the Thieves - Fagin’s two main men are Jack Dawkins and Charley Bates. - They both steal from an old gentleman. - They run away after they take the old man’s handkerchief. - The old gentleman catches Oliver and accuses him of stealing. - Everybody in the street starts shouting 'stop thief' and they chase Oliver. - Oliver trips and falls to the ground. - A policeman seizes Oliver. - The old gentleman says that he doesn’t think that Oliver stole the handkerchief. - The shopkeeper says that his son saw it all happen, so Oliver is released. - The gentleman asks for a carriage. - Oliver faints when he is taken from the police station. - Oliver is taken to a large house. ## Chapter 7 - A Better Home - Dr Losberne looks after Oliver. - He is very ill and is taken to Mrs Badwin’s room for several weeks. - Oliver looks at the picture of a lady on the wall. - Mrs Badwin tells Oliver not to talk about it because he is still weak. - Mr Brownlow looks at the picture and then at Oliver and sees that they look very much alike. - The next day, the picture has gone. - Oliver likes his new life in the house and does not mind having a job collecting for the undertaker. - Mr Brownlow speaks to Oliver about his future. ## Chapter 8 - Back Among the Thieves - Oliver asks to go out and work. - He is taken to the street. - He sees an old gentleman. - He runs away when Dawkins and Bates steal the old gentleman’s handkerchief. - The old man chases him. - Oliver falls to the ground and a crowd gather around him. - He tells the policeman that another boy took the handkerchief. - He is taken to the police station. - He is terrified. He is afraid to speak. - Mr Brownlow tells the policeman that he is not sure that Oliver stole the handkerchief. - He is released. - He faints. - Mr Brownlow calls a carriage and takes Oliver to his house. - They stay in the house. - Fagin wants to find Oliver. - Sikes and Nancy run through the streets with Oliver. - They take Oliver to a house in a dirty, narrow street and take him inside. - They laugh at Oliver for being a little gentleman now. - Sikes throws books into the fire and beats Oliver because he thinks he has stolen the books. ## Chapter 9 - Bill Sikes - Sikes and Nancy are at Fagin’s house. - Sikes is an angry man. - Fagin tells Oliver to be careful and to do what Sikes says. - Oliver prays for God to save him. - Nancy tells Oliver to come with her to see Sikes. - Bill Sikes is pleased that Oliver is with them. - He points a gun at Oliver’s head. - He threatens to shoot him if he speaks a word. - Sikes wakes Oliver up at 5 am. - They go to a small town and are seen by people, especially a guard on a coach. - The guard talks about a terrible murder. - Sikes is frightened. - Sikes decides to go back to London. - He is afraid of the dog. - Sikes takes the dog to a river and ties a stone to his handkerchief so that the dog will drown. - The dog runs away. - Sikes continues his journey alone. ## Chapter 10 - Oliver is Safe Again - Oliver wakes up in pain. - Sikes has shot him. - He goes to the nearest house for help. - He knocks on the door. - He faints. - They take him to Mr Giles's house. - He is in a lot of pain. - Mr Giles tells everyone that Oliver is one of the thieves that he has caught. - Mr Giles is frightened about what he has done. - The doctor stays in Mr Giles's room for more than an hour. He brings a bag from the carriage and uses the bell. - The doctor returns to the ladies, Mrs Maylie and Rose. They are very happy to hear that Oliver is going to be okay. - The doctor takes the two ladies to see Oliver. - Oliver is in a deep sleep. - Rose brushes Oliver’s hair and her tears fall on his face. Oliver smiles in his sleep. - They can’t believe that he is a thief. - The doctor tells them that Oliver was a pupil of thieves. ## Chapter 11 - The Mysterious Stranger - Oliver is well and getting stronger. He is bigger and healthier. - One evening, Oliver, Rose and Mrs Maylie go for a longer walk. Rose plays the piano, and then her hands start to shake. - Rose tells them that she feels tired and will go to bed. - The next morning, Rose is worse. - Dr Losberne is called. - Oliver is sent to the inn to take a letter to Dr Losberne. - Oliver meets a man in a black coat, who curses him and threatens him. The man faints. - Oliver goes back to the inn for help. - Dr Losberne goes to see Rose. He tells them that Rose is very ill. - Oliver goes to the church and sits on the grass. He prays for Rose. ## Chapter 12 - Mr Bumble and the Stranger - Mr Bumble is the master of the workhouse. - A man in a black coat visits Mr Bumble. - The man asks Mr Bumble a question. - The man gives Mr Bumble two gold coins. - The man makes a deal with Mr Bumble, giving him 25 gold coins for a story. - Mr Bumble asks his old friend, the other woman, about what her friend said to her on her death bed. - The old woman says that the young girl talked about a young child – Oliver Twist. - The old woman says that Oliver was a baby when she received the ring, the locket and two pieces of hair from his mother. - The old woman shows the jewelleries to Monks. - Monks throws the bag into the river. - Mr Bumble and the other woman promise that they won’t talk about any of this. - The man in the black coat was Monks. ## Chapter 13 - Nancy Learns a Secret - Bill Sikes is ill. - He is rude to Nancy when she helps him out of bed. - Fagin visits Sikes and tells him that they are going to get Oliver back. - Fagin takes Nancy away from Sikes to get money. - They talk about Oliver. - Fagin tells Nancy that she must go to find Oliver because he has been taken away and they must get him back. - Nancy goes to Rose’s hotel. - She is shocked to see that he is a kind woman. - Nancy cries and tells Rose that she has been taken away and that she sleeps on the streets with no friends. - Rose tells Nancy that she is sorry for her and asks her to stay. - Nancy tells Rose about a man called Monks. - She tells Rose that Fagin and Monks are planning to make Oliver a thief again. - She tells Rose that Monks hates Oliver, and he wants to see him dead. ## Chapter 14 - A Visit to Rose Maylie - Sikes is drunk. - Nancy leaves the house. - She goes to the hotel. - The servant takes a message to Rose Maylie. - Rose tells Nancy that she will be glad to help her if she is in trouble. - Nancy tells Rose that she is afraid that Monks will kill her. - She asks Rose how she found the hotel. - Nancy tells Rose that Monks knows about Oliver. - She tells Rose that Monks knows about her. - Nancy asks Rose to promise to get in touch with her alone or just with the other person who knows about her. - Rose promises that she will keep her promise. ## Chapter 15 - Old Friends Meet - Oliver wants to see Mr Brownlow. - Rose tells Oliver that she will take him to see Mr Brownlow. - She goes with Oliver to Mr Brownlow’s house. - She asks to see Mr Brownlow on important business. - Mrs Bedwin, who looks after the house, leads Rose to Mr Brownlow’s room. - She meets Mr Brownlow and his friend, Mr Grimwig. - Rose tells Mr Brownlow that she wants to tell him about Oliver. - She tells them that Oliver is a good boy. - Mr Brownlow is surprised and is very interested. - He is happy to hear about Oliver. - Mr Brownlow rushes to get Oliver. - He kisses Rose. ## Chapter 16 - Midnight on London Bridge - Fagin and Sikes are talking about Oliver. - Nancy puts on her coat and hat. - Sikes asks Nancy where she is going. - She tells him that she is not well. - Fagin tells Nancy that if Bill Sikes behaves badly, she knows that she can always go to him for help. - Nancy leaves Fagin. - Fagin follows Nancy. - Fagin thinks that Nancy is tired of Sikes. - Fagin wants to find out where she goes at night and follow her. ## Chapter 17 - Nancy is Murdered - Sikes is in a terrible mood. - He is angry that Nancy has disobeyed him and talked to strangers. - He is afraid that his plans will fail. - He hates Nancy. - He thinks that Nancy may tell the police about him and he may go to prison. - Fagin comes into Sikes’s room. - Fagin asks Sikes if he has found Oliver. - Fagin takes the bag from Sikes. - Fagin locks the bag away. - Sikes tells Fagin to go to the police station to find Oliver. - Sikes threatens to kill Noah Claypole but Fagin tells him to be quiet. - He wants to know what Noah has seen and if he followed Nancy. - Noah tells Fagin that Nancy went to London Bridge to meet a gentleman and a lady. - He tells Fagin that Nancy gave them information about Monks. - Sikes is furious. He runs out. - Fagin tells him to be careful. - Sikes goes to his room and shuts the door. - Sikes throws a heavy table against it. ## Chapter 18 - Sikes Escapes - Sikes tries to clean himself up. He is covered in blood. - Sikes takes his dog out of London. - Sikes sleeps in a field. - Sikes goes to a pub. - Sikes hears men talking about a terrible murder. - The men are talking about a murder in London. - Sikes is frightened. - He decides to go back to London. He is afraid of the police. - He thinks about going to France. - Sikes is afraid that the police will see him with his dog. - He takes his dog to a river. - He ties a stone to his handkerchief. - He waits for the dog, but it runs away. He is alone. ## Chapter 19 - Monks is Caught - Mr Brownlow arrives home. - He brings Monks with him. - The men sit down to talk, and Monks is angry with Mr. Brownlow. - Mr. Brownlow tells Monks that he knows about his family. - He tells Monks that he knew his father. - He tells Monks that his father met a woman called Agnes. - He tells Monks that his father had a son called Oliver Twist. - Monks wants to get the money that is now with Oliver. - Monks tells Mr. Brownlow that he tried to kill Oliver. - Monks confirms that he gave Fagin money so that he could destroy Oliver. - He tells Mr. Brownlow that he gave a ring and a locket to Fagin, so that Fagin could find Oliver. He tells Mr. Brownlow that the name Agnes is in the ring. - Mr. Brownlow says that he overheard the conversation between Monks and Fagin. - Mr. Brownlow says that he also heard Fagin tell Monks about the murder. - Monks is terrified. - Mr. Brownlow tells Monks to tell the truth and that he will sign some papers for money to be given to Oliver, and Monks can then leave the country. - Mr. Brownlow tells Monks that he will keep the truth secret. - Mr. Brownlow asks Monks if he knows Mr. Bumble. ## Chapter 20 - The Death of Sikes - Sikes is hiding in an empty house with Toby and Charley. - Sikes hears noises outside. - He hides on the roof of the house. - The police come to the front of the house with ladders and torches. - Sikes looks down. - He ties one end of the rope to the chimney and the other end to himself. - Sikes ties a knife to his hand, so that he can cut the rope. - Sikes sees the ghosts of Nancy's eyes. - He falls off the building. The rope stops his fall. - He dies. ## Chapter 21 - The End of the Story - Fagin is in prison. - The judge tells Fagin that he will be hanged. - Fagin hears the bell ringing. - The officer tells Fagin that someone wants to see him. - Mr Brownlow arrives with Oliver. - Mr Brownlow tells Fagin that he has the papers he took from Monks. - He tells him that Sikes is dead and that he has been caught. - Fagin asks Oliver to come near him and whispers to him. - Oliver says that he is not afraid. - Fagin tells Oliver where the papers are hidden. - Fagin watches the men outside build the platform for his execution. - Charley Bates decides to live an honest life, and works for a farmer. - Mr Brownlow takes the papers to a lawyer and Oliver receives half of the money left to him by his father. - Mr Brownlow gives Monks some money. - Monks dies in prison in America. - Mr Bumble loses his job as master of the workhouse and goes back to live there. - Noah Claypole continues to give information to the police. - Oliver lives with Mr Brownlow. - Rose and Mr Brownlow move together.
