The Nursing Process Nursing’s Critical Thinking framework Thinking and the Nursing Process Critical thinking is the foundation of professional nursing practice. Doing without first thinking critically about phenomena promotes habitual modes of doing which is not consistent with the goals of professional nursing. The Nursing Process and How to Think Like a Nurse The Nursing Process is the discipline of nursing’s critical thinking framework, and it is used by all professional registered nurses (Generalist and APRNs) for clinical decision-making in order to provide patient-centered, outcome-focused care. The Nursing Process TheNursing Process is used only by registered nurses. TheNursing Process provides a common language, format, and process that registered nurses use. The Nursing Process is used in all clinical settings/patient situations. TheNursing Process allows you to think like a nurse! The Nursing Process – what is it? The Nursing Process allows nurses to: identify patient responses to health and illness situations; Plan nursing care that assists patients to deal with those situations; Implement nursing care to facilitate positive patient outcomes; and Evaluate the effectiveness of the nursing care given. Standards of Professional Nursing Practice The American Nurses Association (ANA) is the professional nursing organization that represents all RNs in the United States (it is not education or specialty based). ANA is responsible for developing the standards of practice for the discipline of nursing. The ANA Standards of Practice are authoritative statements that outline the duties a competent nurse, regardless of role, population, or specialty, is expected to perform. Standards of Professional Nursing Practice & the Nursing The ANA Standards of Practice describe a Process competent level of nursing care.
