ARTERIES & NERVES OF THE HAND: Dr.Saywan K.Asaad ULNAR ARTERY: ❑ The ulnar artery enters the hand above the flexor retinaculum. ❑ It forms the superficial palmar arch, which is completed on the other side by the superficial palmar branch of radial artery. BRANCHES: 1) One proper palmar digital artery to the medial side of little finger. 2) Three common palmar digital arteries. RADIAL ARTERY: ❑ The radial artery leaves the dorsum of the hand by turning between the first and second metacarpal bones. ❑ On entering the palm, it forms the deep palmar arch which is completed on the other side by the deep palmar branch of ulnar artery BRANCHES OF RADIAL ARTERY: 1) Princeps pollicis artery 2) Radialis indicis artery BRANCHES OF DEEP PALMAR ARCH: ❑ Three palmar metacarpal arteries that anastomose with the common palmar digital arteries of the superficial palmar arch. VEINS OF HAND ❑ ❑ ❑ Dorsal venous arch Cephalic vein Basilic vein MEDIAN NERVE: ❑ The median nerve enters the palm by passing behind the flexor retinaculum and through the carpal tunnel. BRANCHES OF THE MEDIAN NERVE IN THE PALM: 1) Muscular (recurrent) branch: supplies muscles of thenar eminence & 1st and 2nd lumbricals. 2) Three proper palmar digital nerves 3) Two common palmar digital nerves BRANCHES OF THE MEDIAN NERVE IN THE PALM: 1) Muscular (recurrent) branch: is the most lateral branch that supplies muscles of the thenar eminence & first lumbrical muscle. 2) Three proper palmar digital nerves: pass one to each side of the thumb & the radial side of index finger. ❑ Thus the cutaneous branches of median nerve supply: ❖ palmar aspect of the lateral three and a half fingers and ❖ distal half of the dorsal aspect of each finger. ULNAR RADIAL MEDIAN ULNAR NERVE: ❑ The ulnar nerve enters the palm anterior to the flexor retinaculum. ❑ As it crosses the retinaculum, it divides into a superficial and a deep branch. SUPERFICIAL BRANCH OF THE ULNAR NERVE: ❑ Gives off: 1) One common palmar digital nerve 2) One proper palmar digital nerve: to the medial side of the little finger. ❑ Thus the cutaneous branches of ulnar nerve supply: ❖ palmar aspect of the medial one & a half finger and ❖ Distal half of the dorsal aspect of each finger. ULNAR RADIAL MEDIAN DEEP BRANCH OF THE ULNAR NERVE: ❑ The deep branch of the ulnar nerve gives off muscular branches to the three muscles of the hypothenar eminence, all the palmar and dorsal interossei, the third and fourth lumbrical muscles, and the adductor pollicis muscle.
