THE MATERIAL SELF OBJECTIVES Explain the different aspects of the material and economic self Illustrate the relationship of one’s material self in the formation of one’s sense of value Reflect on the value of material possession and having economic sense on one’s self development MATERIAL SELF Is a dimension of the self that relates to PHYSICAL MATERIALS M AT E R I A L S E L F refers to our BODY as well as the TANGIBLE OBJECTS, PLACES, THINGS that we describe as “MY” or “MINE” We are what we HAVE Material Self has 2 sub- classes The Body Self The body and all its parts. These entities are clearly an intimate part of who we are. The Extra-corporeal Self The self beyond the body This is our extended self. –all people places, things that we regard as OURS COMPOSITION OF MATERIAL SELF -William James HOME IMMEDIATE FAMILY CLOTHES BODY BODY The most essential part of our material self Intentionally we invest in our body We strive to make sure that this body functions well We have certain preferential attachment to certain parts of our body because of its value to us. Your choice of clothes says a lot about you Our choice of clothing is one of the best ways to distinguish our social class, as well as our culture, our CLOTHE profession and our sex preference. S Clothing is a form of self expression We chose and wear clothes that reflect our self These people are likely to shape and influence the development of self identity Immediate Our parents and our siblings hold a great important part of our self Family What they do or become affect us HOME Our home is the source of LIFE, it is where our heart is… it is our SANCTUARY It is where we can relax, rest and enjoy life with family and friends.
