Each Paulinian will be able to: identify the features and screen elements of MS Word; describe what users can do using MS Word; describe and explain the MS Word basic commands; and create a simple document using MS Word. What is Microsoft Word? Microsoft Word is a widely used graphical word processing software designed by Microsoft Corporation; launched in 1983; allows the user to create, edit, store, and print documents. How to start a Microsoft Word? Starting Microsoft Word ✓ Using windows start button ✓ Using search tool ✓ Using icon from the desktop Microsoft Word Screen Elements 1. File 2. Quick Access Toolbar 4. File Tab commonly referred to as the “Backstage”. allows the user to: create a new document saving, printing opening an existing document sending through email publishing or closing 2. Quick Access Toolbar located at the top left corner of the Word window it provides the user with quick access commands that is frequently used. Save, Undo, Redo, New, Open, Quick print and Print preview. 3. Ribbon is a collection of nine horizontal tabbed toolbars plus the new added Tell Me textbox arranged on top. 1. Home tab is where the user can format the font face, text color, paragraph alignment, and change line spacing. 2. Insert tab is where the user can insert table, shapes, pictures, chart, page number, comments, hyperlink and more. 3. Design tab is where the user can change the themes of a document; add watermark, page color, page borders, and more. 4. Layout tab is where the user can format the page orientation, paper size, columns, wrap text, groupings in a document. 5. Reference tab is where the user can create a table of contents, insert footnote, endnote, citation, bibliography and index. 6. Mailings tab is where the user can create envelops, labels, mail merge, address block, greeting line, and merge field. 7. Review tab is where the user can check a document for spelling and grammar, use thesaurus, show mark up, and protect document. 8. View tab is where the user can hide/show ruler, gridlines navigation pane, split document, view document side, and view macros. 4. Title bar displays the title of the document on the which the users are currently working. 5. Tell Me/Help it helps the user to find about a certain command in performing specific task while creating a document by simply typing the keywords or phrases. 6. Window Controls (Minimize, Maximize and Close Button) set of three buttons located in the top right corner of the window. Maximize button Minimize button Close button 7. Ruler (Horizontal and Vertical) the ruler is located at the top (horizontal ruler) and to the left (vertical ruler) of the document. 8. Cursor it is the blinking vertical line appears while typing. 10. Text Area is the working area in word document. 11. Status bar it is located at the bottom part of the window and provides information such as the current page and the number of words. 12. Document Views these allows the user to use different views of a document. Read Mode Web Layout Print Layout 13. Zoom Control it is use to zoom in or zoom out the page. How to exit or close the Microsoft Word program? Exiting Microsoft Word 1. Using the Ribbon tab: Click on the File tab --- click CLOSE. 2. Using Window Controls: Click Exit button. 3. Using keyboard shortcut key: Press Alt + F4. ASSESSMENT #1: EXERCISE 1: TYPING TEST and BASIC FORMATTING using HOME TAB of MS Word. Type the sentence “Jay Wolf is quite an expert on the bass violin, guitar, dulcimer, ukelele and zither.” 50 times using Microsoft word. Format: 1. Use the font TIMES NEW ROMAN, size 14. 2. Page Orientation – Portrait. 3. Filename: Assessment #2-Typing Test-Juan Dela Cruz.
