Summary
This document provides a guide on magnification calculations, including conversions between different units such as millimeters (mm), micrometers (µm), and nanometers (nm). It shows examples of calculations using a scale line and provides a formula for calculating actual size when magnification is given.

MAGNIFICATION UNITS OF MEASUREMENT: You should always measure a scale line or a specimen in mm Centimetre = cm Millimetre = mm Micrometre/ micron = um Nanometre = nm CONVERSIONS: To convert mm to um: (Multiply by 1000) mm x 1000 = answer in um To convert um to mm: (Divide by 1000) um / 1000 = an...
MAGNIFICATION UNITS OF MEASUREMENT: You should always measure a scale line or a specimen in mm Centimetre = cm Millimetre = mm Micrometre/ micron = um Nanometre = nm CONVERSIONS: To convert mm to um: (Multiply by 1000) mm x 1000 = answer in um To convert um to mm: (Divide by 1000) um / 1000 = answer in mm To convert cm to mm: (Multiply by 10) cm x 10 = answer in mm To convert mm to cm: (Divide by 10) mm / 10 = answer in cm To convert cm to um: (Multiply by 10 000) cm x 10 000 = answer in mm To convert um to cm: (Divide by 10 000) mm / 10 000 = answer in cm To convert mm to nm: (Multiply by 1000 000) mm x 1000 000 = answer in nm To convert nm to mm: (Divide by 1000 000) nm / 1000 000 = answer in mm MAGNIFICATION CALCULATION IF MAGNIFICATION IS GIVEN: Actual size = measured size / magnification MS- Measured size. You measure the image on the page in mm AS- Actual size The actual size of the structure in real life in mm MAG- Magnification The amount the structure has been magnified (enlarged) Answer with the unit “times” “X” at the end. Example: MAGNIFICATION CALCULATION IF A SCALE LINE IS GIVEN: Actual size = measured size x true length of scale line/ measured length of scale line Actual size- The actual size of the specimen Measure size- The measured length of the specimen on the page True length of scale line- the given size of the scale line as written under the scale line Measured length of scale line- the measured length of the scale line on the page NOTE: The units for each measurement must be the same (e.g. all in um) Actual size (in um) = measured size (line AB measured in um) x true length of scale line (25 um is stated under the scale line) / measured length of scale line (line CD measured in um) NOTE: all units are in um in this example If I measured: line AB as 8mm line CD as 23mm 1. CONVERT to um: 8mm x 1000 = 8000um 23mm x 1000 = 23 000um 2. STATE FORMULA: Actual size (AS) = measured size (MS) x true length of scale line (TLSL) / measured length of scale line (MLSL) 3. INSERT NUMBERS: AS= 8000 x 25 / 23000 = 8.69 um Remember the unit!
