Let us pray the Prayer that the Lord taught us… Lesson 6: PRAYER IN THE NEW TESTAMENT “Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.” The First Letter of St. Paul to the Thessalonians 5:16-18 OUR OBJECTIVES FOR THIS LESSON: ➔ Discuss the prayers of Jesus and His way of praying. ➔ Relate how Jesus Christ hears and intercedes in our prayers. ➔ Distinguish that Mary’s prayer serves as our model of prayer ➔ Creatively expresses the role and importance of prayer in one’s life by identifying significant personal experiences through a timeline. HOW DO WE PRAY AS FOLLOWERS OF CHRIST? “Acquire the habit of speaking to God as if you were alone with Him, familiarly and with confidence and love, as to the dearest and most loving of friends.” - St. Alphonsus Liguori TUWING KAILAN KA NAGDARASAL? HOW DID JESUS PRAY? ❖ Jesus learn to pray from his family in in the synagogue. ❖ Yet Jesus broke through the boundaries of the traditional prayer. “Mary and Joseph taught Jesus to Pray” SOMETHING SPECIAL IN JESUS… ❖ The finding of Jesus at the temple shows that there is something original, profound and unique in His union with the Father. ❖ I and the Father are one. (Jn 10:30) ““Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?” (Lk 2:49) RECITATION: WHO DO YOU SAY I AM? (Mt 16:15) “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (Jn 14:6) GOD THE FATHER AND GOD THE SON IS ONE. ❖ The Incarnation of God's Son reveals that God is the eternal Father and that the Son is consubstantial (with same nature and substance) with the Father, which means that, in the Father and with the Father the Son is one and the same God. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #262) “Jesus is the sole mediator between man and God the Father.” JESUS’ LIFE AND PRAYER The life of Jesus is a “single prayer.” This is best shown when he: ❖ Prayed for forty days in the wilderness and was tempted by the Devil. ❖ Chose and appointed His 12 Apostles and Fathers of the Church. ❖ Endured His passion and death on the cross. “Jesus public ministry is a long prayer dedicated for our contrition and salvation. ” JESUS’ LIFE AND PRAYER “Jesus’ prayer is intense...” ❖ He is often in solitude. ❖ He is one with the Father and the Holy Spirit – the guiding principle of His earthly life and ministry. “And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? ” (Mt 26:40) JESUS’ LIFE AND PRAYER “The Lord prays before His passion...” ❖ Jesus also experienced the human feelings including intense fear. Before His arrest, He prayed intensely until His sweat became blood; He cries to His Father and fell prostrate in prayer, saying, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; yet, not as I will, but as you will.” (Mt 26:39) ❖ After which, He found the strength and hope of victory. When His arrest came and has submitted “The hour has come for the Son of Man himself willingly. to be glorified. ” (Jn 12:23-24) Let us learn from Jesus how to pray ❖ The disciples learn by listening and imitating Jesus. ❖ The watchful and strive for purity of heart give up everything for the kingdom forgive their enemies trust believe in God and love him “A new command I give you: Love one another. above all thing As I have loved you, so you must love one another. ” (Jn 13:34) Let us learn from Jesus how to pray… ❖ By his example and devotion Jesus invited his disciples to say to God: "Abba, dear Father.” if we pray in the spirit of Jesus we walk in Jesus's shoes and can be sure that we will arrive unfailingly in the heart of the father. (YouCat #477) “Misericordes sicut Pater.” “Maging maawin katulad ng Ama.” (Mt 6:36) Faith is our response to God ❖ "Many people called on Jesus for healing, and Jesus answered your prayers. The risen Lord listens to our petitions and bring them to the father close.” (YouCat #478) “Daughter, your faith has saved you. Go in peace and be cured of your affliction. ” (Mk 5:34) Faith is our response to God ❖ Jesus word whole series of well and tested cures, signs and miracles to the lepers, the blind, deaf, mute, paralytic, and more. “When he had gone indoors, the blind men came to him, and he asked them, “Do you believe that I am able to do this?” “Yes, Lord,” they replied.” (Mt 9:28) Are we sure God hears our prayers? ❖ There are also testimonies of prayers answered by the Saints. ❖ Many Christians can tell stories how they called God, and God heard them. (YouCat #478) “In my distress I called out: LORD! I cried out to my God; From his temple, He heard my voice, my cry reached his ears.” (2 Samuel 22:7) Gospel of St. Mark 11:24 ❖ “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you receive it, and you will.” Let us ask ourselves… Are there times where in God answered your prayers in a different way? Are we sure God hears our prayers? ❖ Let us fully trust God with our faith always burning, and let us always raise everything up to him. Surely, He will answer our cries and prayers. “On the day I called, You answered me; You made me bold with strength in my soul. ” (Ps 138:3) Mary, the model of our Christian faith ❖ Prayer is ultimately self-giving in response to God's love. If we say FIAT (yes) as Mary did, God has the opportunity to lead his life in our life. ❖ Let us turn always to our Blessed Mother, for she is the model of our faith and the epitome of total obedience to God. She is the mediator between Jesus Christ and the Church. “...His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” (Jn 2:5) Catechesis of Pope Francis on Prayer “Prayer is the breath of faith it is the most proper expression [towards God]. Like a cry that issues from the heart of those who believe in trust themselves to God.” “On the day I called, You answered me; Pp. Franciscus I You made me bold with strength in my soul. ” (Ps 138:3) Lesson 6: PRAYER IN THE NEW TESTAMENT “Rejoice always. Pray without ceasing. In all circumstances give thanks, for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus.” The First Letter of St. Paul to the Thessalonians 5:16-18
