TEACHING AND THE ASSESSMENT OF THE MACRO SKILLS LESSON 2 Prepared by: PRINCESS LEANNE MAE V. MONAHAN, LPT STRATEGIES IN TEACHING LISTENING Lesson 2 What usually are your problems when attending lecture classes? Is it easy for you to recall important points from a class lecture? Why or why not? STRATEGIES IN TEACHING LISTENING Lesson 2 As a future teacher, in what way you can help your students remember your lecture? STRATEGIES IN TEACHING LISTENING Lesson 2 TEACHING LISTENING Teaching this skill provides an avenue for students to be exposed to rich input and an authentic sample of oral texts. STRATEGIES IN TEACHING LISTENING BOTTOM-UP Teachers may ask students to: point out familiar words from the oral texts. identify the meaning of unfamiliar words from texts listened to locate the syllable stress from words, and stress from sentences. STRATEGIES IN TEACHING LISTENING BOTTOM-UP Teachers may ask students to: determine synonyms and antonyms from texts listened to. Identify grammatical relationships between key elements in sentences. find collocations and idioms. STRATEGIES IN TEACHING LISTENING TOP-DOWN Teachers may ask students to: Write down as many words and phrases related to the topic they are about to listen to get the idea from the texts listened to. discriminate between emotional reactions. listen for specific information STRATEGIES IN TEACHING LISTENING TOP-DOWN Teachers may ask students to: generate questions from topics heard write journal of their listening activities. identify conversation themes. STRATEGIES IN TEACHING LISTENING Lesson 2 Three key stages in teaching listening: before-listening, while listening, and after listening. Richards (2008) in Lopez, et.al. (2020) explains that: before-listening stage while-listening stage post-listening phase STRATEGIES IN TEACHING LISTENING LESSON 2 PRE-LISTENING Identifying vocabulary/comprehension needs. before listening, you can already select some vocabulary for students to study. Activating interest. the listening text should be familiar, interesting, and within students’ level of understanding. STRATEGIES IN TEACHING LISTENING LESSON 2 PRE-LISTENING Putting it in context. According to Vandergrift, teachers need to help students organize their thoughts activate appropriate background knowledge for understanding and to make predictions to prepare for listening. Setting the purpose. students should be cued in advance on what specific points they need to attend to when listening. STRATEGIES IN TEACHING LISTENING LESSON 2 WHILE-LISTENING Listening and re-listening. listening becomes more challenging if you’re using adapted audio texts from foreign speakers. Guided listening and Scaffold note-taking. If you need your students to complete something while listening you have to make sure that they have previewed an understood the written task first before listening begins. STRATEGIES IN TEACHING LISTENING LESSON 2 WHILE-LISTENING Thinking space. Give them time to process the information by pausing in between paragraphs, and check now and then if they are still following. STRATEGIES IN TEACHING LISTENING LESSON 2 POST-LISTENING Responding to text. You can provide discussion questions or evaluate questions that would guide students in processing what they feel and the ideas based on their experiences, or even answer the questions they have raised during pre-listening. STRATEGIES IN TEACHING LISTENING LESSON 2 POST-LISTENING Analyzing linguistic features of the text. depending on the goal of your listening task, you can also ask students to analyze language forms from the script. Integrating speaking and writing. Since listening is receptive skill, you may also want to design tasks that would require students to use their productive skills. STRATEGIES IN TEACHING LISTENING LESSON 2 TIME TO REFLECT ESSAY: TOPIC- What is the importance of listening? THANK YOU PASS THE WORD the last student will use the WORD in a sentence
