Significance of amino acids (SDL) Bological functionsof amino acids: Apart from being the building units of proteins, amino acids serve variety of functions such as: Specific amino acids give rise to specialized products: Tyrosine forms hormones such as thyroid hormones, (T3, T4), epinephrine and norepinephrine and a pigment called melanin.  Tryptophan can synthesize serotonin and a vitamin B3( niacin). Histidine changes to histamine Glycine is used for the synthesis of heme Glutamic acid forms gamma amino butyric acid (GABA)  Glycine, arginine and methionine synthesize creatine. Glycine and cysteine help in synthesis of Bile salts.  Glutamate, cysteine and glycine synthesize glutathione. Pyrimidines and purines use several amino acids for their synthesis such as aspartate and glutamine for pyrimidines and glycine, aspartic acid, Glutamine and serine for purine synthesis.
