It does not change with age. Clinical crown: the part of the crown that is only seen in the oral cavity above the gum line. It increases with age. Alveolar process: The portion of the jaw which serves for tooth support. Alveolus: The bone of the tooth socket. Crypt: It is a bone surrounded cavity in the jaws in which development of a tooth takes place. Classification of teeth 1) According to the arches a) Maxillary arch (maxilla) → maxillary teeth b) Mandibular arch (mandible) → mandibular teeth maxilla Maxillary teeth mandible Mandibular teeth 2) According to their appearance and persistence in the oral cavity a) Deciduous teeth (primary) ( 6 M → 5 Y ) b) Mixed dentition ( 6 Y → 10 Y ) c) Permanent teeth ( 11 Y → 18 ) The Dentitions Deciduous/primary teeth Permanent Dentition 3) According to functional categories A) Anterior teeth: - incisors (central & lateral) cut and incise the food. -canine. hold, grasp, pierce and tear flood substance. B)Posterior teeth: -pre-molars help in holding and tearing flood rather than incising it. -Molars *molars chewing and grinding of food.
