Practical Microbiology I Lab. 1 Devices and Tools Used in Microbiology Lab. Pharmacist : Muthanna Taha Syllabus 1. Devices and tools used in microbiology lab.. 2. Sterilization and disinfection. 3. Bacterial detection methods in lab. including: - Bacterial staining tests - Culture media tests - Biochemical tests 4. Antibiotic sensitivity tests (AST). 5. Laboratory information of bacteria ( G+, G- ). Devices Used in Microbiology Lab. Balance : Is a device used to weight the laboratory materials. Oven : Is a device used to sterilize glasses and surgical tools. Autoclave: Is a device used to sterilized media and glasses Incubators: Is a device used to keep growing of bacteria at 37 Ċ for 24 hour. Water bath : is a laboratory equipment made from a container filled with heated water, used to incubate bacteria and keep it at a constant temperature. Centrifuge: is a device that uses centrifugal force to separate various components of a fluid. Hot plate with magnetic stirrer: is a device used to heat and mixed the solution. PH meter: Is an instrument used to measure the acidity and alkalinity of the culture media of bacteria. Laminar air flow: is a system that provides continuous air flow that is uniform in both direction and velocity, used to prevent contamination of biological sample. Tools used in microbiology lab. 1- Loop 8- Centrifuge tube 2- Bunsen burner 9- Graduated pipette 3- Conical flask 10- Micropipette 4- Volumetric flask 11- Glass slide + Cover slide 5- Measuring cylinder 12-Dropping bottle 6- Beaker 13- Petri dishes 7- Test tube Microscope Microscope: is a laboratory instrument used to examine objects that are too small to be seen by the naked eye. Types of Microscopes 1- Simple microscope. 2- Ordinary (compound) microscope. 3- Electronic microscope: a- Scanning Electronic microscope. b- Transmission Electronic microscope. Part of Microscope A Mechanical parts: B Light parts: 1- Head 1- Eye lens (10x) 2- Arm 2- Objective lenses 3- Stage a- Low power lenses (4x, 10x, 40x) 4- Clips b- High power lenses(100x) lens 5- Revolving disk called oil immersion lens. 6- Coarse adjustment 3- Condenser 7- Fine adjustment 4- Light source 8- Base (Foot) Note : Xylene is a popular solvent for cleaning of objective lenses using lens paper.
