Unit One: Information & Research ELA 7 Objective/ Learning Target Conduct research. Gather relevant sources both print & digital. Quote & paraphrase data while avoiding plagiarism. Assess the credibility of each source. This unit will encourage students to think critically about the information they receive from the media everyday. Media Definition: the methods of communication intended to reach a wide audience of people. Two Major Groups: Print Media: usually printed with paper & ink. (permanent & unchanging) Digital Media: requires electricity to broadcast information. (constantly updating/ interactive.) Other Important Terms Mass Media Media (print or electronic) created to reach large numbers of people. News Media Media (print or electronic) that focuses on delivering news via tv, radio, internet, etc Social Media Electronic media that allow for people to interact with the content and each other. What is the purpose of media? 1. To inform 2. To persuade 3. To entertain Most media messages have clear central ideas & is intended to reach people. INFORMATION & RESEARCH: RESEARCH GUIDE We frequently turn to media sources for information therefore it is important to understand how to research properly. You will be conducting your own research on a topic of your choice in the near future. This will be your summative grade. RESEARCH PLAN Write these steps in your notebook Step One: Review the assignment- Make sure you understand all elements of the task before you begin. For example, gardening is a topic that interests me, however it is too broad. After viewing information online, I decided to focus on why gardening is a great way to reduce stress for young people. BRAINSTORM Let’s focus on step 3: your research questions should lead you to basic information about the topic. Avoid “yes” and “no” questions. What are some questions about gardening that we may want to ask? MEDIA SOURCES WRITE THREE SENTENCES IN YOUR NOTEBOOK. EXPLAIN IN DETAIL. What kind of media sources can I use to find more information about gardening? RESEARCH PLAN Write these steps in your notebook Step Four: Identify the types of sources you will need to answer your research question. You are not looking for specific titles yet, but you are thinking about the types of media sources that would be helpful. This is where you will go online to any search engine and look for sources. ALWAYS look for multiple sources so you have a variety of information. Do not stop at the first source you find. Library Interviews or surveys Online databases for magazines and newspapers Credible Internet Sites: sites ending in .edu, & .gov are some of the most reliable for finding accurate information. Note: Sites ending in .com and .org may be reliable, but you must be cautious. Anyone can create a .com website and .org websites are usually biased.
