INTRODUCTION TO FIBER OPTICS – BASIC BY SGT KUMAH S SCOPE INTRODUCTION TO FIBRE OPTICS TYPES OF FIBRE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTANTAGES OF FIBRE OPTICS FIBRE OPTIC DESIGN DEFINITIONS OF THE PARTS OF THE FIBER OPTIC CABLE COLOUR CODING SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FIBER OPTICS What are optical fibers? Fiber optics (optical fibers) are long, thin strands of very pure glass about the diameter of a human hair. It's arranged in bundles called optical cables and used to transmit light signals over long distances. It is a flexible transparent material of extruded glass or plastic used in the transmission of light signals. These signals can be analog or digital and voice, data or video information. TYPES OF FIBER FIBRE OPTIC DESIGN DEFINITION OF THE PARTS OF THE FIBER Core - Thin glass center of the fiber where the light travels Cladding - Outer optical material surrounding the core that reflects the light back into the core Buffer coating (sheath) - Plastic coating that protects the fiber from damage and moisture FIBRE OPTIC COLOR CODING Fiber optic cable standard color code for fibers; BLUE RED ORANGE BLACK GREEN YELLOW BROWN VIOLET SLATE ROSE WHITE AQUA SAFETY PRECAUTIONS Store chemicals safely and correctly labelled. Use chemicals in well-ventilated area. Keep chemicals away from your skin and eyes and avoid ingestion. Be familiar with COSHH (Care Of Substances Hazardous to Health) guidelines. Dispose of all fibre fragments in a suitable container. Don't pick up fibre fragments by hand, use sticky tape for example. Wear protective goggles and gloves before working with fibre Workers must avoid smoking whiles working with fibre.
