Interactive E-book Development Eslam Manaa ADIP Center Microsoft Sway History First Preview for selected user in 2014 Official Released by Microsoft in August 2015 Sways are stored on Microsoft's servers and are tied to the user's Microsoft account. Microsoft Sway is a free app that helps gather, format, and share reports, newsletters, web pages, and presentations on an interactive, web-based canvas that looks great on almost any screen. Sway is a digital story-telling app made of a 'dynamic, interactive canvas'. You can include images, make them into photo stacks or make comparisons using sliders. Insert 3D graphics, interactive maps, interactive charts, social media or embed other documents. Sway has a built-in design engine, adapts to any screen size. Have multiple authors and collaborate on a Sway. What devices support Sway? Sway on the Web is best experienced when using Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer 11, Firefox 17 or later, Chrome 23 or later, and Safari 6 or later etc. Viewing a Sway on the Web works at any screen resolution but creating and editing a Sway requires a minimum screen width of 600 pixels or larger. Sway works in all modern mobile browsers, regardless of platform. Note: Instructions in this session only apply to the Sway desktop version in Windows 10 and the online version of Microsoft Sway. Create a Microsoft Sway Presentation Once you log in to or open the Sway app, you can choose to start from scratch or base your design on one of the many templates provided. Go to http://sway.office.com and log in with your Microsoft account to use Sway online. Type sway into the Windows Search box and select the Sway app to open Sway on your desktop if you have it installed Open Sway and select “Start from a document” Supported file types:.docx …… office word documents.docm …. Power point presentation.doc…… office word 97--2003.pdf Inserting your e-book into Sway: If Your previously prepared e-book is larger than 20 MB , divide it into small files. Sway doesn’t upload large files at one upload Inserting your e-book into Sway: Sway main tabs The Storyline is where you type, insert, edit, and format the content that tells your story. The Design is where you can change the design Work With Cards in the Storyline The Storyline is what makes Sway unique. Unlike other Office applications, Sway uses cards in which you: create or import a variety of content. A card is a sort of container that holds content within a Sway presentation, like a placeholder in PowerPoint. The arrangement of the cards determines the appearance of your Sway presentation. You can easily rearrange the cards whenever you want to modify the way your Sway looks. Title card The first card of your sway will be “Title Card” This is where you can add your e-book title Your e-book will be created once it’s uploaded on sway with the title you entered at the title card Cover Page of your e-book It will be the second Group of your sway containing an image “with the cover page” and a text card containing text on your cover page The copy right page: Text card containing the copy rights and an image card containing creative common licences Your content will be divided into groups Your headings will be the guid lines for sway to divide your content Adding the next part of your e-book Go to the last card of your sway, click the plus sign “+” Upload all your e-book parts using the same way Choose the layout of your sway Press Design Tab ---- styles There are 3 different layout that can be applied to your sway (Vertical, Horizontal, slides) Choose the layout you want Adding cards to your sway There are 3 types of cards: 1. Text (Heading1, Heading2, Text) 2. Media (image, video, audio, embed, upload) 3. Group (Automatic, grid, comparison, stack, slideshow) Adding interaction to your sway Sway offers different types of interaction as: 1. Inserting group of images, the viewer can browse 2. Record your voice to explain a certain part of your e-book 3. Insert videos to explain certain topics 4. Embedding content on your sway (Google maps, videos…etc.) 5. Using all the above for story telling to clarify certain topic. 1. Inserting group of images If you have some images showing a topic you can choose all those images ---- group ---- select group type “automatic, stack, grid ….etc.” Adding cards inside and outside the group To insert a new card at your group, click the + sign in the inner border To insert a new card outside the group, click the + sign in the outer border 2. Record your voice Insert a new card ---- choose media --- audio You can select either to import audio file or to directly record your voice Supported audio files: Inserting videos Click to add a new card --- choose media---- video Embedding content Embedding a location When you share your location there are several options Choose embed a map Choose the size of your embedded map --- copy HTML Paste your HTML code at its place on the embed card Storytelling Storytelling is the art to tell stories in order to engage the audience. The storyteller conveys a message, information and knowledge, in an entertaining way. Literary techniques and nonverbal language are his tools. The Science of Storytelling Digital storytelling: Combination of oral traditional storytelling with visual and sound capabilities of digital media. Digital storytelling process: 1. Come up with an idea 2. Research, explore, learn 3. Write script 4. Storyboard, plan 5. Gather and create “images, audios, videos” 6. Put it all together 7. Share 8. Feedback and reflect How to Collaborate on a Sway Presentation MS Sway is ideal for collaborative designs, as well. Whether you need to pitch in with classmates on a school project or work with colleagues on a company report, everyone involved can easily work together on a Sway presentation no matter where they are located, provided they have internet access. One of the sharing options is called Add an Author. When you use this feature, Sway generates a unique link you can share via email, social media, or any other way you want to with all of the people you want to collaborate with on the presentation. Not only will they be able to view the Sway using this link, but they can also edit the file. And, if you change your mind, no worries. You can manage editing permissions on any Sway presentation. Open the Sway presentation on which you want to collaborate with someone else. Select Share in the upper-right corner. Select the Edit button next to Invite People to. An edit link will be generated. Share your story You can also share your design with others on a variety of platforms using numerous methods. Select Share in the upper-right corner to view sharing options, including: A shareable link. A visual link with a preview of the Sway. Direct share to Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn. An embed code. Protect your Sway Select More Options. Choose Require a Password to View or Edit This Sway if you want to protect the presentation with a password. Select Viewers Can See Share Buttons if you want other users or viewers to be able to share the Sway. If you ever wish to revoke access to your Sway, select Reset the Share Settings in the Share menu. The web address of your Sway will be permanently changed so the link you shared previously will no longer work for anyone. You can create a new link to reshare with whomever Privacy settings in Sway When you create a Sway, it becomes a private web page. It is not posted anywhere and can't be indexed. This means you won't be able to find it by searching on a search engine (such as bing.com or google.com) or your company site. If you haven’t shared your Sway with anyone, then only you can see it. Privacy settings in Sway What do the different permissions settings mean? Specific people: The author has specified that only specific people can view the Sway. Only the people permitted will be able to access it. Those in your organization: The Sway can only be accessed by people in the author's organization or school. Anyone with a link: Anyone who has the link will be able to access the Sway Privacy settings in Sway If I send a link to my Sway to someone who hasn't signed in, what will he or she see? If the Sway’s permissions are scoped to specific people or people in your organization: The recipient of the link will not be able to view your Sway without logging in; instead, he or she will be prompted to log in to see the content. If the Sway’s permissions are set to anyone with a link: The recipient will open the link and be able to view your Sway right away. He or she will not be required to sign in to see the content. Export, Download & Print Sway requires an Internet connection and needs to remain online to manage the layout of your content. In case you want to store an offline copy of your content, you can export your Sway content to Word or PDF You also can print your Sway content. Know your readers with Analytics Metrics that are captured for each Sway include: Total views Average time spent Average completion Read ratio (Glanced, Quick Read, Deep read Analytics empowers content creators to tweak their content to improve reader engagement over time and create engaging and impactful Sways.
