Human Flourishing and Good Life Let us talk about Aristotle. So how did Aristotle define Human Flourishing/ According to Aristotle: He described Humans in the peak of being happy, he described us or me as a good spirited. As good spirited in the idea of good friendship, having wealth, and power. So if you are going to think: Aristotle really defined human as being good. A good spirited. Actually, this is the idea of Aristotle. As we go back to Greek civilization As we go back to Greek civilization: The ancient Greek society, they believe that if you acquired the qualities of virtues or being good spirited. Then it is easy for you and me to partake into the goodness of humans. Here, Aristotle defined humans in the idea of being happy. When the individual person is being happy, then you are capable of doing good things. If we are happy we are capable to build good relationship with others, to share your wealth and your power. As times change, elements that trying to define human flourishing also change. There is lot of things that are happening right now. Sometimes the definition human flourishing also change because of the changes that we are currently embarking. People right now found means to live more comfortably, to explore more places, to develop more products and making more money. And then try to repeat the process in order to live comfortably, making a lot of money. This is the concept of Aristotle. Example: In the ancient times, early people relied on just simple life, machine or technology to make hunting and gathering easier. Ganon lang ka simple. Because of this development it allowed them to make more sophisticated ang mga machines to aid them in their daily endeavors and eventually nagkaroon tayo ng space exploration, medicine innovation and ventures of life. As the time passed, our life, technology also changes. Because of the dynamic of social history, the life style of the people and technology also change. People this time invest a lot and make innovation, invention of different technologies to make our lives Our concept of human flourishing today are expected to become a man of the world. For what reason? Because he is supposed to situate himself in the global neighborhood. Sinasabi natin globalization, working side by side among institutions and government to be able to reach the common goal. So competition as means of survival has become passe or out of dated or out dated na. The new trend now is coordination. We need to coordinate with other people, and generally coordinate with other countries. That’s why we have globalization. Here, we tend to blend in with other people, with other countries for survival purposes. So that is why the idea of human flourishing of Aristotle has been changed. The way you define being successful is different the way I define it. So we have different notion on how we see t h i n g s. S o w e h a v e d i ff e r e n t n o t i o n s o n h o w w e considered ourselves as being successful. So this the idea of human flourishing. There is discrepancy between Eastern and Western conception regarding society and Human Flourishing. May silang differences regarding sa point of view. If you will observe that western civilization or western conception tends to be more focused on the individual view, while those from the east are more on community- centric or focus on community as a whole. From Western philosophy, Human flourishing is an end. while Eastern philosophy is holistic. Another is the Aristotelian view: Because Aristotle was the one who founded the concept of Eudaimonia while the Eastern conception, they have Chinese Confucian system, Japanese Bushido. Both of which the whole greater components. One philosopher claims that eastern philosophy is concerned with the general knowledge while Western philosophy aims the specific knowledge. An example given by academic scholars is How Confucius Analects deal with both inner and outer life of a person which talk about holistic the general view of it An example given by academic scholars is How Confucius Analects deal with both inner and outer life of a person which talk about holistic the general view of it while Aristotle’s work emphasized How one should conduct one self to live well among others while fragmentary (incomplete). Next is the aim. The western conception: Aims for Eudaimonia as the ultimate good. There is a focused on the individual to aim for this ultimate good while the Eastern conception, They are encourage to studies of literature, science and Arts for the greater cause. If you see the presentation: you will observe nga mayroon sila differences. Science, technology and Human Flourishing. § Every discoveries, innovations, and success contributes to our pool of knowledge. So human flourishing deeply intertwined with goal setting relevant to science and technology. So paano nagconnected ang Human Flourishing or intertwined with goal setting relevant to science and technology? Because science and technology is relevant as a tool in achieving human flourishing. The goals of both science and technology and human flourishing are related, that the good is essentially related to the truth. So science ventures its claim on truth. Paano natin masasabi that goal both science, technology and human flourishing are related? And that good is essentially related to the truth. Remember: Science is a process to find something. That the good is essentially related to the truth. According to the philosopher: It is inherently related to the truth. Why? Kasi when you are telling the truth. Then it is a good behavior or good attitude. Example: In our daily activities. Pag ikaw palagi kang magsisinungaling. Others will conclude nga hindi ka mabuting tao. You keep on lying, hindi ka masasabing totoo. Tendency that people will not maniniwala sa iyo anymore. Walang tama ang ginagawa, magsisinungaling na lang. That’s why masasabi natin That good is essentially related to the truth. And science then is one way to reveal the truth. Science as Method and Results Vienna Circle In addition: Example in Verification Theory In Verification Theory Hindi ka maniniwala agad anong nakikita mo. For you know the fact kung talagang totoo nga maygusto yon. So you have to verify mo sa kanyang ginagawa. Then you found out the real thing. Base from the story: Is it justified for Leah to think that Ian does not like her. Ginagreet naman sya ni Ian. Here in Number 2, you are going to determine the problem and identify factors involved. Falsification Theory Human Flourishing E u d a i m o n i a , literally “good spirited”, is a term coined by renowned Greek philosopher Aristotle (385-323 BC) to describe the pinnacle of happiness that is attainable by humans. This has often been translated into “human flourishing” Aristotle’s 12 Virtues 1. Courage - Bravery 2. Temperance - Moderation 3. Liberality - Spending 4. Magnificence - Charisma, style 5. Magnanimity - generosity 6. Ambition - pride 7. Patience - Temper, calm 8. Friendliness - social IQ 9. Truthfulness - honesty, candidness 10. Wit - Humor, joy 11. Modesty - Ego 12. Justice - sense of right/wrong Nicomachean Ethics As discussed in the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle’s human flourishing arises as a result of different components such as phronesis, friendship, wealth, and power. All human activities aims at some end that we consider Good. The The Nicomachean Ethics by the Greek philosopher Aristotle consi ders the nature of human action and ethics, rooted in the concept T h e p r i m a r y f o c u s i s t h e v i r t u e o f character. For d e v e l o p i n g v i r t u e o f character, there is an emphasis on habituation, or the process of d e v e l o p i n g habits over time A r i s t o t l e identified two virtues in his N i c o m a c h e a n Ethics: virtue o f t h o u g h t , e s p e c i a l l y w i s d o m , a n d v i r t u e o f c h a r a c t e r. What are the types in Nicomachean Ethics? ØAristotle specifically mentions the life of gratification (pleasure, comfort, etc), the life of Aristotle’s view: § “A certain goods (life and health) are necessary preconditions for h a p p i n e s s a n d t h a t o t h e r s (wealth, friends, fame, honor) are additions that p r o m o t e a g o o d l i f e f o r a Human Flourishing We are living in a time of change. A unique feature of the past year and a half is that it has pushed so many of us into a period of self-examination and reassessment. We have asked: “What makes life worth living? How can I overcome adversity in my own life and help others to do the same? In short, we have asked: How can we flourish not just to survive? But despite their importance, these questions at the heart of human flourishing are miserably neglected. To open this dialogue, we turn luminaries in the broad range of fields from around the world to get their perspective on what flourishing means and what flourishing world looks like. Human Flourishing It is an effort to achieve self-actualization and fulfillment within the context of a larger community of individuals, each within the right to pursue his or her own such effort. A r i s t o t e l i a n Flourishing H e p o s i t e d t h a t w e a r e s u p p o s e d t o cultivate good c h a r a c t e r i n o r d e r f o r o u r Human flourishing is the process of developing the capacities, strengths, and virtues of the individual in different areas Examples of Human Flourishing: Human flourishing includes basic or 'generic' goods and v i r t u e s – f o r example, such goods a s k n o w l e d g e , health, friendship, c r e a t i v e a c h i e v e m e n t , b e a u t y , a n d pleasure – and also Refining Science In refining science there are two main theories involved: 1. Verification Theory – gives premium to Empiricism and only takes into account those results which are measurable and experiment which are repeatable. This theory explains that wisdom comes from our experiences with our 5 Senses. Sense of sight Sense of feeling Sense of Taste Sense of hearing And others Refining Science Falsification Theory ØIt does not promote ultimate adoption of one theory but instead encourage research in order to determine which among the theories can stand the test of falsification. ØThe strongest one is that which is abled to remain sustained amidst various tests, while being to make particularly risky predictions about the world. Verification Theory A discipline is science if it can be confirmed or interpreted in the event of an alternative hypothesis being accepted. Premium on Empiricism. ØThe word Empiricism means evidences Take into account those results which are measurable and experiment which are repeatable. So in this case verification theory : ØKung anong evidences using the 5 senses. These are wisdom that contributes to our Eudiamonia. Falsification Theory As long as an ideology is not proven to be false and can best explain a phenomenon over the alternative theories, we should accept the said ideology. Encourages research in order to determine which among the theories can stand the test of falsification. z For Plato, the task of understanding the things in the world runs parallel with job of truly getting into what will make the soul flourish. In an attempt to understand reality and the external world, man must seek to understand himself, too. However, Plato also claims that despite the reality of change, they remain and they retain their ultimate whatness. Sociological Philosophies that Help in the Development of Science Materialism The first materialists were the atomists in Ancient Greece. Democritus and Leucippus belief is that the world is made up of and is controlled by tiny indivisible units in the world called atomos or seeds. For Democritus and his disciples: the world, including human beings is made up of matter. Materialism The idea that matter is the only thing that exists and that everything can be reduced to matter is known as materialism (and energy since matter is a form of energy). As a result, materialism Hedonism The word "hedonism" is derived from the Greek word for pleasure. According to psychological or motivational hedonism, we are e x c l u s i v e l y motivated by p l e a s u r e o r s u f f e r i n g. This group believe that they can do things at their own and believe happiness can only be attained by careful practice of apathy. Theism Theism is the belief that everything that is limited or finite is somehow reliant upon a single supreme or ultimate reality, which one may also refer to personally. It is common to refer The Philippines, as a predominant Catholic country, is witness to how people base their life goals on beliefs that hinged on some form of supernatural reality called heaven. Theism The world where we are in is only just a temporary reality where we have to maneuver around while waiting for the ultimate returns to the hands of God. This is the philosophy of Theism. Humanism is a philosophical stance that emphasizes the value and agency of human beings, individually and collectively Humanists see themselves not merely as stewards of the creation but as individuals who are in control of themselves and the world outside them.
