Special Senses - Olfaction What is the purpose of a sense of smell? Smell is a chemical sense. What is meant by this? Can you name another chemical sense? Special Senses - Taste How many different tastes can we detect? What are they? What do these tastes tell us about the food? What is the structure of the tongue that allows us to taste? Special Senses - Vision Label the key structures of the eye What is the purpose of the following: Cornea: Retina: Iris: Lens: The eye contains both rods and cones. What is the difference between the two?  Special Senses - Hearing Referring to some of the structures in the above image, explain how sound is perceived by the ear? Our senses of hearing and balance rely on specialised hair cells. What are the hairs called? What causes these hairs to move? Special Senses - Proprioception What is proprioception? What are the two receptors involved with proprioception?  Spinal Nerves How many pairs of spinal nerves do we have? Tips! - Practice, practice, practice! You will need lots of repetition to remember the cranial nerves. Have a friend/family member etc quiz you from your own notes. Are you able to recall the information? - During exams, make use of the blank paper you’ve been given. Before you start the exam, WRITE DOWN your mnemonics - OOOTTAFVGVAH, SSMMBMBSBBMM - side by side. When asked questions about cranial nerves, you won’t have to figure it out each time - you can refer to what you’ve already jotted down as a memory trigger (but you still need to know them all - don’t just memorise the mnemonics!)
