Public Health (HLTB16) Fall 2019 Assignment 1 Due: Wednesday, October 23, 2024 via Quercus Turnitin by 11:59pm Overview Students will write a brief report describing a significant twentieth century public health achievement; the key people and processes responsible for its development; and its impact on population health. They will critically assess the achievement by describing unanswered questions, ongoing challenges, and/or populations that continue to experience related health inequities. Learning objective The learning objectives for assignments in this course are based on the Public Health Agency of Canada’s core competencies for public health professionals. By completing this assignment, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge about the history and structure of the Canadian public health system (Core Competency 1.2) and critically evaluate related public health actions, policies, and programs (Core Competency 3.6). Public health achievement options (From CPHA) Your assignment must be on one of the following public health achievements: 1. Decline in deaths from coronary heart disease and stroke 2. Acting on the social determinants of health 3. Healthier mothers and babies No other topics will be accepted. Key components in the report: Your report should include an Introduction and a Conclusion. In addition to these sections, please ensure that your report covers the following key components: 1. Identify your chosen public health achievement and briefly describe it: What health issue does it address? How is it thought to be associated with this health issue? (Note: There can be multiple health issues that an achievement addresses. Pick at least one focus.) 2. Describe the history of the achievement: When was the need to address the related health issue first identified? Who were the key people and what were the key processes and milestones involved in laying the groundwork for the achievement? 3. Describe the success of the achievement: Since its implementation, how has it impacted population health? Has implementation been successful? Why or why not? 4. Think critically about the achievement: Is its implementation contentious in any way? Has its positive impact been long-lasting and universal? Is there room for improvement? What would you recommend to make improvements on its impact? Your report should be written in the context of the Canadian public health system specifically. 1 Public Health Agency of Canada. Guidelines on the number of references you are expected to draw on are included in the marking rubric. Formatting Assignments should be 4 pages (not including the cover page or references). Assignment files should be labeled using the following convention: Last name First name_Assignment number_Tutorial section (e.g., SmithJohn_Assign1_Tut4). All assignments should include a cover page that contains: an informative assignment title, course title and code, instructor of the course, tutorial section, date, student name, and student number. The body of the assignment should be double-spaced, using Times New Roman size 12 font and 1-inch margins. To do well on this assignment, all of the required space must be used; assignments with excessive “blank space” within the four-page limit will not receive full marks. Be sure to use references where appropriate; references should follow the National Library of Medicine’s Uniform Requirements referencing system, used commonly in public health: www.nlm.nih.gov/bsd/uniform_requirements.html. For in-text citations, please use the "citation sequence style". Superscript numbers are used to refer to the references, and references are then numbered in the reference list in the order they first appear in the text. Submission Please submit the assignment to the Turnitin Module on Quercus by 11:59pm on Wednesday, October 23,2024. Refer to the course late day policy in the syllabus. Useful resources - The Canadian Public Health Association, Ontario Public Health Association, Public Health Ontario, and Toronto Public Health may have useful information related to Canadian implementation of your chosen public health achievement. - https://utsc.library.utoronto.ca/library-tutorials/types-of-sources Academic integrity Academic integrity is taken very seriously for assignments, as with all aspects of the course. Remember to always use your own words and to provide a reference for ideas that are not your own. Use quotations (with references and page numbers) sparingly and only to illustrate important points. If in doubt, talk to Dr. Schlueter during office hours or make an appointment with the Writing Centre (http://www.utsc.utoronto.ca/twc/) and draw on one of their many useful resources (http://www.writing.utoronto.ca/advice/using-sources/paraphrase) Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence Tools Students may use artificial intelligence tools for creating an outline for an assignment, but the final submitted assignment must be original work produced by the individual student alone. Otherwise, the use of generative artificial intelligence tools or apps for assignments in this course, including tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Microsoft Copilot and other AI writing or coding assistants, is prohibited. The knowing use of generative artificial intelligence tools, including ChatGPT and other AI writing and coding assistants, for the completion of, or to support the completion of, an examination, term test, assignment, or any other form of academic assessment, may be considered an academic offense in this course
