Service Industry A service is provided to the customers. Meaning and Differences of Products and Services Businesses offer products and services Products - goods, commodities, or merchandise. Produced in farms or manufactured factories. Services - activities or processes that are provided for using one’s expertise, knowledge, and skill in a specific area. These are intangible services that you can offer. 1. Rental goods - Rented by the customers. 2. Owned goods- Repair and maintenance services 3. Non-goods - Perseonal services from professional experts. Types of Products 1. Durable goods or hard goods These are products that are useful over long periods. Costly because of the quality of materials 2. Nondurable goods or soft goods These are products easily consumed, worn out, unfashionable and have a lifespan of less than three years. Characteristics of Services 1. Intangible - can not be touched, stored, transported, packaged, or tested before buying. 2. Inconsistent or varied - These services are difficult to standardized because each service provider is unique and has varied performance. 3. Inseparable - The services cannot be seperated from the person that offers them. 4. Perishable - The service cannot be stored for future use. Types of Services 1. Business Services - These activities support the daily functioning and management of any business. 2. Emotional appeal is when people feel connected to a product or service. 4. Need-based consumers or seasonal consumers. This type of buyer only makes purchases when there is reason, purpose, and/ or problem to solve. Unlike impulsive consumers, need-based consumers have a clear motivation whenever they buy. REMEMBER A successful entrepreneur produces products or services that will meet the customers needs and expectations at affordable prices. Products are the results of different materials made, grown, processed, invented, and innovated to be sold or used. Services are paid activities provided by employees or professionals to customers. Introduction to ICT in HELE Subject (Chapter 2) Lesson 1: Communication and Collaboration Using ICT Online chat is talking to people over the internet by typing a message displayed to everyone in the chat room or, if privately, in a chat box. Online Chat Chat rooms, newsgroups, and discussion forums are avenues to meet new friends through the internet. Chatting Chatting is talking to someone by typing messages over a virtual room, similar to email. Chat messaging applications Google Hangout Google Hangouts is an application that is used for communication and collaboration. It lets you share files, send photos and texts, and video chat, among others. It can be accessed online through a Google account or downloaded on an electronic device. Let’s know how to download and use Google Hangouts. (page14-15) Proper Online Chatting The following are reminders on how to use online chat safely and responsibly: Respect your friends' availability. Use chat shortcuts to make conversations more convenient and acceptable. Keep conversations light. Be careful and as much as possible, do not give personal information online. Visit and join chat rooms that are appropriate for kids or minors your age. Do not meet a person you only met online. Use proper punctuation. Internet Forum also known as message board, is an online discussion website wher its members can create conversation using posted messages. USING FILE EXPLORER Computer Files Computer Files Several websites allow sharing of information or files. Registered users can access the downloadable resources, which are either free or for a fee. A shared file can be a document, spreadsheet, or slide presentation. Digital Media File Digital media is any media encoded or stored in a computer. Digital media files include videos, digital images or audio, video games, websites and web pages, and e-books (electronic books) stored in computers and hard drives. These are created, viewed, distributed, modified, and preserved in electronic devices like a computer. File Format A computer has a standard way of encoding or storing information in the hard drive called file format. It is a file layout that defines and categorizes a particular computer document. It also tells how to display, print, process, and save the encoded and stored information. Document File Format A document file format is a text or twofold file format used to read documents in a word processing program. DOC and DOCX are the most known document file extensions created by Microsoft for its Word documents. DOC stands for document file. Microsoft Office document format contains formatted text, images, tables, graphs, charts, page formatting, print settings, and pictures embedded in XML markup. File extension or filename suffix is a three- or four-letter code at the end of a filename and is used to identify a file. LESSON: FILE SHARING File extension or filename suffix is a three- or four-letter code at the end of a filename and is used to identify a file. filename - Mylesson. docx file extension The table below shows the most common list of file extension suffixes: File Formats File Extensions Plain text files.html or.htm.txt Formatted Documents.doc.pdf Compressed and encoded files.exe.zip File Formats File Extensions.bmp.png Image.gif.svg.jpeg or.jpg.tif or.tiff.aac.mp3 Audio.flac.wav.midi or.mid ,wma.avi.mpg or.mpeg Video.mov.wmv.mp4.vlc 2 Ways of File Sharing 1. Peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing. The shared files on the user's computers are indexed on directory servers. This is used by popular services like Napster, Limewire, and BitTorrent. 2. Cloud-based file syncing and sharing. The shared files are stored and updated in folders or a directory on the user's networked devices. The files can be accessed through a website and a mobile app. Some of the popular files hosting services are Dropbox, Google Drive, and OneDrive. Cloud storage is a model of storing computer files or data in accessible, multiple, and connected resources. GOOGLE DRIVE Google Drive allows you to store, synchronize, and share files across devices. It was developed by Google and launched in 2012. It is also accessible in any internet browser and mobile app. TAKE NOTE: Online chat is a form of communication over the internet by typing a message. Chat and instant messaging services have made online communication easier and faster than email. An internet forum is an online discussion website where members can create conversations using posted messages. TAKE NOTE: Digital media file is any media encoded or stored in a computer. Document file format is the standard way of encoding or storing a computer file on a hard drive. File extension is the filename suffix that is usually a three- or four-letter code at the end of a filename. Lesson: Advanced Web Searching Search Engine A search engine is a powerful tool that provides a quick and convenient way to retrieve vast amounts of information from the World Wide Web. It is software designed to find information on various websites and web pages. It makes gathering information easier and faster. Search Engine A search engine finds websites and web pages. The automated programs called spiders and robots will copy everything they find on the internet and send it back to the search engine database that stores and indexes each item. Advanced Web A search engine is a Searching helpful tool used to find a website without knowing its Uniform Resource Locator (URL). Common advanced web searching techniques: USE BOOLEAN OPERATORS. CAPITALIZE USE QUOTATION KEYWORDS MARKS FOR SPECIFIC PHRASES Boolean operators When you use capitalized key words, Quotation marks should (AND, OR, and NOT) are be used to enclose used in words or the results will only phrases as key words so phrases for Boolean show documents Google containing that the search engine searches or searching. that capitalized word. will show results Boolean searching, developed by George Boole, a nineteenth-century English mathematician, was built as a symbolic logic on the internet. The table below shows the Boolean operators and their functions. Operator Functions Example It connects two key words and business AND AND brings results that include both to them computer It looks for the synonyms, broaden OR search and brings result to either Kind OR Gentle or both keywords. NOT or It removes results containing that chicken NOT word. AND NOT catfish Lesson 2: Advanced Features of Search Engine Credibility of Websites Credibility of Websites 1. Look at the domain 2. Know the author or writer 3. Check the copyright 4. Verify the sources 5. Observe layout 6. See the writing style 1. Look at the domain Domain names provide easy-to-remember, recognizable, and memorizable names to internet resources. Know the author or writer Websites generally have info by checking the About Us section. Try searching for the name of the author independently to check his or her credibility. 3. Check the copyright or the published date The date is located at the bottom of the page or after the title of an article. If it is more recent, the information is up-to-date. 4. Verify the sources If the article has cited sources or references, like books and scholarly articles, it is considered credible. 5. Observe layout The layout or design of a website influences the user. Although a layout can be subjective, a well-designed website is believed to give reliable information. Good design helps users to view the information easily. 6. See the writing style Poor spelling and grammar are an indication that the website may not be credible. Credible websites use formal language and proper grammar rules to make the information easier to understand. World wide web The World Wide Web (www or Web) was invented by Sir Timothy John Berners-Lee, also known as TimBL, in 1989. On August 6, 1991, the Web became publicly available. The Web is also: a The web pages support collection of interlinked multimedia, text, graphics, information stored in sound, and video. Lesson: Gathering and Analyzing Information using ICT Spreadsheet Program The spreadsheet or worksheet is computer software used in businesses and schools to store, calculate, organize, and process mathematical, financial, and scientific data. It features different tools to create, edit, format, and print computation statements. The Microsoft Excel Microsoft Excel or Excel is one of the popular spreadsheet software that provides users with a worksheet on the screen and enables them to make use of programmed or encoded formulas to work on various calculations. 1. Organize and store information in columns and rows. 2. Alphabetize and sort a list of information according to a numeric field or mathematical data. 3. Calculate large amounts of data to save time. 4. Create graphs and charts to illustrate and understand the data easily. 5. Perform school, office, and business applications. Excel is used in the following situations: a. Keep track of the amount of product sold and services provided and profit. b. List supplies purchased, expenses, and cost. C. Record scores and grades. d. Keep track of expenses and compute taxes and bills. e. Check, balance, and audit income and expenses. The Excel Environment 1. Workbook It refers to an Excel file that contains a default of three workbooks. 2. Shared workbook. It allows editing and viewing by multiple users. NAME BOX TITLE BAR FORMULA BAR COLUMNS ACTIVE CELL CELL WORKSHEET ROWS WORKSHEET TABS STATUS BAR 3. Worksheet. It has rows and columns. It is also known as a spreadsheet. 4. Active worksheet. It is the worksheet you are currently working on. 5. Cell range. It is a collection or block of selected cells. 6. Cell address. It is composed of a column letter and a row number. It is located on the top left corner of a worksheet (Example: Al). 7. Grid. It is formed when rows and columns intersect or are laid upon each other. 8. Row headings. These contain a horizontal line of cells. Each row is numbered by succession from the top. 9. Column headings. These contain a vertical line of cells identified by an alphabetical letter for each column. 10. Cell. It is where a row and a column intersect. 11. Title bar. It displays the name of the workbook or document. 12. Ribbon. It is found below the title bar. It contains commands categorized in tabs and groups. 13. Formula bar. It displays the operation contents of the active cell. 14. Name box. It shows the location of each cell in a worksheet. 15. Worksheet tab. It moves from one worksheet to another. 16. Status bar. It tells when Excel is ready and waiting Formula In creating a formula, there are a few things you need to remember: It always starts with an equal sign). The equal sign tells Excel to calculate based on the values you entered. It can contain one or more operators. An operator instructs Excel on what mathematical operations are to be performed. Function Using a function is a faster way of doing mathematical operations than using a formula. For instance, if you want to add the values of cells from A1 to A10, you type all the values in the cell address. It will take a long time and you might miss some values while typing. You use this formula: =Al+A2+A3+A4+A5+A6+A7+A8+A9+A10 Good thing there is a shortcut for this: = SUM(Al:A10) Average Function Average function in Excel calculates or solves numbers. The table shows the functions of using average in your computation. Lesson 3: Gathering and Analyzing Information using ICT Creating a Chart using Microsoft Word Microsoft Word is a word processing program designed to help you create professional- quality documents Creating a Chart using Microsoft Word A flowchart shows a step-by-step process and arrangement or order of procedures. It is represented by symbols to describe the nature, steps, or properties of a system or program in a short and easy way. It represents a logical sequence of your work, manufacturing process, system, and organizational chart. Start/End It represents the start or end point. Arrows It connects, directs, and shows the relationships between the shapes. The common symbols Input/Output It represents the input or used in a flowchart. output. Process It represents the process. Decision It indicates the decision. Lesson: Creating a Brochure Using Microsoft Word What is brochure? A brochure is a printed material that can be folded with pictures and information about an event, location, product, or service. It is mainly used by businesses to advertise their products. A template is a predesigned document with styles and layout that can be modified easily.
