1. Use what you have learned from the Egg Cracking video to explain how different types of matter have different properties. Sample Answer: Different types of matter have different properties. The egg in the photo or video has physical properties as well as chemical properties. Its physical properties are that it is contained in a hard shell that can break, and the inside of an egg is flexible. Eggs change when heated, which is a chemical property. 2. Which property measures the space taken up by an object? a. hardness b. mass c. volume d. weight 3. Use information you have obtained to explain how properties of matter can be measured. Sample Answer: Magnetism can be measured by placing a magnet close to an object, mass can be measured with a balance, and the volume of a liquid can be measured with a beaker or a measuring cup. 4. Describe at least three physical properties that can help identify copper. Sample Answer: Copper has a reddish-brown color and can take on many different shapes because it is able to be formed. Copper can conduct electricity and reflect light. 5. How can we use our five senses to determine if matter has gone through a chemical change? Often, we can see, hear, or smell certain changes that are caused by a chemical change 6. Do all chemical changes happen quickly? Not all chemical changes happen quickly. Reaction rates vary based on factors like the nature of reactants, temperature, concentration, catalysts, and surface area. Some reactions are rapid (e.g., combustion), while others are slow (e.g., rusting). Answer Key with Questions Lesson Check: Identify Properties of Materials 1) How are you able to determine the physical properties of a substance? By using the senses to smell, taste, hear, feel, or see it By comparing it to the substances that surround it By determining its placement on the periodic table of elements By observing how it reacts with other substances By observing its shape and reflectivity Correct Answer By using the senses to smell, taste, hear, feel, or see it Copyright © 2019, McGraw-Hill Education. 1/7 This content was printed for the exclusive use of licensed students. Answer Key with Questions Lesson Check: Identify Properties of Materials 2) Compare the following containers: Container 1 is clear, bends easily, and quickly melts when near a flame. Container 2 is not clear, difficult to dent, and does not melt near a flame. Which container is most likely metal? Support your answer with evidence based on the given properties. Correct Answer Answers may vary. Explanation Sample answer: The empty can is made of metal. It is a hard substance and is not easily bent, unlike the water bottle that is very flexible. If the can was heated, it would not easily melt. If the water bottle was heated, it would melt and change shapes like a plastic. Most metals are not colored or transparent. A can cannot be transparent, like the water bottle. The empty can has all of the properties of a metal. Answer Key with Questions Lesson Check: Identify Properties of Materials 4) Describe at least three physical properties that can help identify glass. Correct Answer Answers may vary. Explanation Sample answer: Glass is brittle because it can break easily, you are able to see through it, and it is hard. Answer Key with Questions Lesson Check: Identify Properties of Materials 5) Anita places three cubes on a table. One cube is lead, the second is ice, and the third is balsa wood. The sides of each cube are exactly 3.5 centimeters long. Which do all three cubes have in common? the same mass the same weight the same volume the same temperature Correct Answer the same volume 6) Fill in the blanks using the available answer choices. Answer Key with Questions Lesson Check: Identify Properties of Materials 9) Describe the property of conductivity. Give an example of a material that would be a good conductor. Correct Answer Answers may vary. Explanation Sample answer: Conductivity refers to how energy, such as heat and electricity, can travel through a material. A good conductor would be metal such as iron or copper. Copyright © 2019, McGraw-Hill Education. 7/7 This content was printed for the exclusive use of licensed students.
