CANONICAL AUTHORS IN THE PHILIPPINE LITERATURE OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to: a. identify the canonical authors and their literary works from different regions in the Philippines; b. appreciate the significance of the three canonical authors and their literary works through a PowerPoint presentation; and c. write a composition addressing the Philippines that reflects their sentiments about the issues it is facing.. CANONICAL AUTHORS refers to the collection of works determined by society to have significant value and importance. LUZON VISAYAS JOSE GARCIA VILLA MINDANAO ADONIS DURADO GARY GRANADA LUZON JOSE GARCIA VILLA JOSE GARCIA VILLA Born on August 5, 1908 Died on February 7, 1997 due to Cerebral Stroke and Multilobar pneumonia, and was buried in St. John’s Cemetery in New York. He was a Filipino poet, literary critic, short story writer and painter. PSEUDONYM: “DOVEGLION” MAN SONGS In 1929, Jose Garcia Villa published “Man Songs”. It is a series of erotic poems that the administrators of the University of the Philippines found too bold and was even fined the Philippine peso for obscenity by the Manila court. THE COCONUT POEM from MAN SONGS The coconuts have ripened, They are like nipples to the tree. Soon the coconuts will grow heavy and full: I shall pick one… many… Like a child I shall suck their milk, I shall suck out of coconuts little white songs: I shall be reminded of many women. I shall kiss a coconut because it is the nipple of a woman. “REVERSED CONSONANCE” The last sounded consonants of the last syllable, or the last principal consonants of a word, are reversed for the corresponding rhyme. Consonant sounds are reversed For example: Near would be run; or rain, reign, green. For light; tell, toll, tale, steal, etc. “COMMA POEM” In 1949, Villa presented a poetic style called ‘comma poems’, wherein commas are placed after every word. A woman without her man is nothing. VS A woman, without her, man is nothing. He was considered as a powerful literary influence in the Philippines throughout much in 20th century. NOTABLE LITERARY WORKS FOOTNOTE THE ANCHORED TO YOUTH ANGEL (1999) APPASIONATA: FIRST, A POEM POEMS IN MUST BE MAGICAL PRAISE OF LOVE (1979) FOOTNOTE TO YOUTH It centers on the story of Dodong, a young man who marries at the age of 17. The story explores the consequences of youthful impulsiveness, particularly the rush to marry and have children without fully understanding the responsibilities that come with it. THE ANCHORED ANGEL (1999) The Anchored Angel features poetry selections from each stage of Villa’s career, a sampling of his short stories and essays, and a selection of critical and biographical essays on Villa written by other Filipino writers. FIRST, A POEM MUST BE MAGICAL "First, A Poem Must Be Magical," also known as *Lyric 17* by Jose Garcia Villa, is one of his most famous works, reflecting his philosophy on what poetry should evoke in the reader. APPASIONATA: POEMS IN PRAISE OF LOVE (1979) A poetry collection of the best love poems by José Garcia Villa. It brought him immediate recognition as one of the finest & purest poets writing today. An example is “Leaned In My Eyes and Loved Me” LEANED IN MY EYES AND LOVED ME This is a short but deeply evocative poem that encapsulates themes of intimacy, connection, and the profound experience of love. He stirred strong feelings and was thought to be individualistic. VISAYAS ADONIS DURADO ADONIS DURADO Born on August 25, 1975, in Cebu City, Philippines. He is a Filipino poet, writer, and cultural advocate. He is a fine arts graduate from the University of San Carlos. He lived and worked in Oman, Thailand, and the United Arab Emirates. In 2017, he received the Knight Fellowship from the School of Visual Communication from Ohio University. Durado helped launch and redesign more than a dozen magazine and newspaper titles in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. He also served as a speaker at design conferences in the United States, Turkey, Ukraine, the United Arab Emirates, India, Indonesia, Bangladesh, and the Philippines. Durado’s work has won international honors from the society for News Design, the Society of Publication Designers, the Society of Illustrators, The Type Director’s Club, etc. Durado has published four books of Cebuano poems. His recent collection “To Whom It May Not Concern” (Pahinugod sa Di Hintungdan). TO WHOM IT MAY NOT CONCERN Translation: (Pahinugod sa Di Hintungdan). The poem reflects on the themes of identity, alienation, and the quest for belonging. The narrative is characterized by vivid imagery and poignant language, illustrating the internal conflicts that arise from feeling disconnected. This masterpiece was a finalist in the 2019 International Book Awards and chosen as one of the best Filipino books of 2017 by CNN Philippines BALAKI KO ‘DAY SAMTANG GASAKAY TA’G HABALHABAL It is a poem by Adonis Durado that captures the intimate moments shared while riding a motorcycle taxi, or “habal-habal.” It celebrates love in everyday moments, inviting readers to appreciate the small yet profound interactions in their own lives. A Filipino singer, songwriter, and actor. He is known for his contribution to the entertainment industry and has been active for over four decades. He began his career in the 1970s, sharing his work to a pop group called “The Gaylads.” THE GAYLADS He later went on to pursue a solo career, and he has released numerous albums of his own music. He has written and recorded many popular songs in the Philippines. "Bakit Papa?" was featured in the hit noontime variety show “Eat Bulaga”. He continues to be a popular and influential artist to this day, and his music and performances continue to inspire and entertain audiences around the world. BAKIT PAPA Bakit Papa, binawi mo pa Ang pag-ibig mo sa akin Ayaw na ba sa aking beauty Kaya ngayon ako’y sawi, Aaaw! Dati-rati ang sweet-sweet natin Oras-oras ika’y na sa akin Bakit nga ba pinaasa-asa Kaya ngayo’y naloloka, Aaaw! BUYAYANG BUYAYANG It is a song that explores themes of love, longing, nostalgia, and peace. Buyayang Buyayang is butuan folk song. The city of Butuan is the regional center of Carigara region in Philippines. The Butuan City is located in the northern part of Mindanao. Buyayang buyayang folk song is about a water strider that hardly breaks the surface of the water as it makes its way across it.
