ER considerations EMERGENCY – sudden, usually unexpected occasion or a combination of events calling for immediate action W.H.O - A term describing “a state” - Demanding decision and extra-ordinary measures - “State of emergency” – somebody in authority demands/imposed rule of engagement/exit strategy (best response) - Risk to health, life, property or environment - ER, mostly requires urgent intervention to prevent worsening of the situation EMERGENCY: incident should be one of the following: 1. Caused loss of life, health detriments, property damage or environmental damage. 2. High probability of escalating to cause immediate danger to life, health, property or environment. EMERGENC NURSING - Special nursing care of individual with perceived physical emotional alteration, critical illness or injury. - Conditions need BLS, CPR, control bleeding EMERGECY CARE - Care given to patient with urgent/critical needs - A response done during emergency situation. The episodic and crisis care to patient with serious or potential life threatening injuries or illness. EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT - A place where people go to seek for help - Agencies able to offer Palliative care - Agencies involved and the procedures used, vary by jurisdiction, and this is usually set by the government, whose agencies (emergency services) are responsible for emergency planning and management EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT - Is the process of preparing for, responding to, and recovering from disasters and emergencies. - A managerial function charged with creating the framework within which communities reduced vulnerability to hazards and cope with disasters. Emergency Mgt. (Trauma) - Establishes priorities, monitors etc. - Helps family cope to sudden death 5 types of Emergencies 1. Medical Emergency – medical conditions 2. Environmental Emergency: a. Biological Emergency b. Chemical Emergency c. Radiological Emergency d. Weather and Home Emergency 3. Toxicology emergency Ingestion of poisons (plant poisoning, drugs or alcohol intoxication (anaphylactic reaction or drug overdose)) Carbon monoxide poisoning: chemicals Insect/animals/human bites: (stings, ticks, snakes & frosty bites, animal and human bites, marine animals, RDP, or puncture by spine) BASIC EMERGENCY RESPONSE 1. Primary Assessment - An initial rapid assessment of the patient to identify life threatening problems (ABCDE – check look, listen, feel) ASSESSMENT A- AIRWAY B- BREATHING C- CIRCULATION D- DISABILITIES E- EXPOSE GUIDELINES IN GIVING E-CARE A – ASK FOR HELP I – INTERVENTION D – DO NOT FURTHER HARM GOLDEN RULE OF E-CARE DO: 1. Obtain consent 2. Think of the worst 3. Respect the victim’s modesty & privacy DON’Ts 1. Let patient see own injury 2. Make any unrealistic provisions SCOPE OF PRACTICE OF EMERGENCY NURSING ER NURSE – had a specialized education, training, and experience ER RESCUE – a rapid movement of patient from unsafe to a place of safety. QUALITIES of an ER Nurse: 1. Has specialized education, training, and experience – to gain expertise in assessing and identifying patient’s health care problems in crisis situation. 2. Established priorities, monitors, and continuously assesses acutely ill and injured patients 3. Supports and attends to families and supervises allied health personnel and teaches patients and families within a time-limited high-pressured care environment.
